There may be all sorts of other reasons why some people end up dating “bad people”. They may be repeating patterns of behaviour they’ve become used to in past relationships or they may find the world of dating stressful and end up making bad decisions. Or they may simply have bought into myths of dating and behave accordingly. But, for the most part, the evidence suggests that both women and men prefer nice partners and are turned off by jerks.

In the very short term, narcissists can even seem more well-adjusted, entertaining and generally nicer. But over the long term, narcissists find it difficult to maintain a favourable impression and tend to be perceived as less adjusted, less warm, and more hostile and arrogant. Not surprisingly, the evidence shows that narcissists don’t like long-term, committed relationships and don’t do well in them anyway.

The problem with the nice-guys-finish-last stereotype, aside from going against the grain of years of scientific evidence, is that it may compromise the possibility of forming meaningful relationships. Perpetuating this myth not only creates unhelpful expectations about how we should behave, but trying to live up to the myth can sometimes damage relationships.

In the end, the idea that women want to date bad boys really just reinforces the misogynist’s idea of deceitful women and earnest “nice” men baffled by their lack of dating success. It allows some men to blame and hate women as a means of deflecting attention away from their own shortcomings. So, if you’re looking to science for some advice, it’s simple: be nice.

Recently, an article published by Broadly claimed, “Everyone knows [bad boys] … are desirable. Thanks to a recent study, this is now scientifically verifiable.”

Let’s take a look at some reliable scientific evidence.

One way to investigate the issue is to present women with hypothetical men with different personality types and see which ones they prefer. In one such study, participants had to help a fictional character named Susan choose a date from three male contestants, based on their answers to her questions. In one version, the man was nice – he was in touch with his feelings, caring and kind. In another, he was a self-described “real man” who was insensitive and unkind. The third contestant simply gave neutral answers.

So which contestant did participants think Susan should date and who did they prefer to date themselves? Contrary to the stereotype that nice guys finish last, it was actually the nice contestant that was chosen most frequently for both Susan and for participants themselves.

In another study, participants who read dating ads in which people described themselves as altruistic (“I volunteer at the food bank”) were rated as more attractive short-term dates and long-term partners than those who didn’t mention such qualities. Other studies have similarly shown that women prefer men who are sensitive, confident and easy-going, and that very few (if any) women want to date a man who is aggressive or demanding. The picture that emerges is clear: when women rate hypothetical partners, they clearly prefer “nice” men.

In fact, the power of niceness shouldn’t be underestimated. Some studies have shown that having a nice personality can even affect impressions of a person’s physical attractiveness. Characteristics such as warmth, kindness, and basic decency are valued by both women and men – having them makes us more desirable partners, but also makes us appear more physically attractive.

After how far women have come, is the "put down" a way insecure men try to keep women in their "place?"

I believe that when men do that put down of women game they are relating to one another, sort of courting one another, maybe the word "showing off" to get recognition from the other male(s) to illustrate that they are the one who has the best greatest sense of self command and independence from needing to appeal to women. The behaviour has nothing to do with the particular woman; their behaviour is directed towards the nature of their relationship with women that causes them to feel self contempt. Subsumed in the behaviour is that their relationship with women is not fulfilling in some way.

One thing that seems to have been in common to all the situations in which this "put down" happens is that it always involves a collective humour where the group (male, female, or club of some sort) participate in something like we experience in stand up comedy skits focused on the "one who is out", not part of the group sharing the humour.

Perhaps a big part of the problem is that many people aren’t even quite sure what a healthy relationship looks like these days or how a “good man” (or woman) should act towards their partner.
I've heard from many people who tell me that there is no affection in their relationship. The man in their life does not make them feel loved, wanted or appreciated and this is a profoundly important piece of the puzzle.
I believe a good man will always remind a women how much she means to him, a good man will always support her, inspire her,a good man will want her to be comfortable and confident in their relationship,he will understand that trust is not just handed over to someone — it has to be earned, and then it has to be kept,a good man will always make her feel beautiful, whether she is in her sweatpants on the couch or in her evening gown looking like a 'million dollars', (at least in his eyes)because when you love someone for who they truly are, everything about them becomes beautiful,a good man will make her feel safe and do little things that make difference in life,a good man will never be abusive.... and vice versa good women will respond in the same way to a man that knows how to appreciate her.

If someone truly loves you, you will know it and feel it. If they don’t, you’ll be wondering all the time if they do.

People Reward Angry Men But Punish Angry Women, Study Suggests.
Research finally catches up to all of the frustrating anecdotal evidence that women are not only stereotyped as overly emotional, but they're also perceived as less influential, competent and rational than men during group discussions. And women are particularly punished for behaving dominantly.

To investigate this dynamic, researchers from Arizona State University and the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted a study to see how people reacted to women versus men who expressed anger in a group setting.

After analyzing the simulation, the researchers found that women's anger worked against them, while men's anger served as a "powerful" tool of persuasion. When the holdout was a male who expressed anger, participants significantly doubted their own opinion, even when they were in the majority. But if the holdout was a woman who expressed anger, she actually had less influence over participants -- so much so that it was the only scenario in the study in which participants became more confident in their own opinion that opposed that of the woman.
When the man was perceived as emotional, he was considered more credible for getting angry. But when the woman was perceived as emotional, participants became more sure of their own opinion, even if they considered the woman credible. As the researchers put it: "When a woman expresses anger, this does not just make her seem less credible, but seems to make assessing her credibility irrelevant."

According to the researchers, these findings demonstrate that "social influence is determined, in part, by the interactive effect between what emotion is expressed and by whom."

For now, dear women of the world, the next time someone makes you feel like you're being overly sensitive or paranoid, just know that you have plenty of reason to be angry.
