Should people be allowed to travel if they do not have Travel Insurance or some other way to cover their expenses in case of an accident?
In my country there is an elderly couple who travelled to Thailand. The woman had a stroke and they need 70,000 dollars to cover medical expenses and 20, 000 to travel back.
Should they have travelled without extra cash in case of an emergency?
No, of course not....with respect....that's a rediculous notion..and so typically American thinking.....no, they are fully entitled to travel with whatever cash they want..and it's no one's business but their own...

charles_nz: Of course people should be able to travel without insurance. It is a matter of personal choice.
While that's all well & good,it's incredibly reckless to travel without insurance. Now they need $90,000, and in hindsight, spending $100 dollars on insurance would seem sensible.
No matter. They can open a gofundme page. Everyone that donates can subsidise their stupidity.

Most of the time when I'm travelling, I'm not insured. I don't take expensive stuff with me. Just clothes, books. an old laptop with a lousy battery (so it has to be connected on the electricity all the time), and a cheap photocamera, and of course my toothbrush, comb etc.

That's a big risk, depending on where you're travelling to. If it's outside the EU and you need hospital treatment, it will cost you dearly. Travel insurance is so cheap, make no sense to take the risk imo.

That's how I do it too. Inside the EU, I just bring my European Health card. If i am going further afield, especially if going to a country where the chances of getting sick are higher.

I suspect my European health card, which I renewed recently, will be of no use come the end of March.
Is he still living in Cork? Not spoken to him for a long time. I met him when he came to see Trish, he's a great guy, always enjoyed his banter on here.
