Agreed, it is always sensible to have insurance. Not just for travel, but for your house, your car, your contents.Now they need $90,000, and in hindsight, spending $100 dollars on insurance would seem sensible.

That said, travel insurance should, in my view, involve weighing up the likely risks involved. I'd always get it now. The one time I went overseas without travel insurance, I contracted cholera. Needless to say, all the times I have purchased travel insurance, I haven't even contracted the a cold.
I'm just not a fan of governments treating adults like children and telling them they must do this, they must do that. People, in my view, have to take some responsibility for themselves.
