I'm reading the book "The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin" by Gordon S. Wood. It reveals how he was a staunch royalist who tried to get the Crown to take more control of the Colonies... but then late in his life realizes his mistakes and becomes the oldest of the Founding Fathers.
It has caused me to look at my own character and see where I am truly American. Living abroad has also shaped my perspective.
Wow.. and I thought it was just a rumor about Franklin. Thank God he seen the light!. Our system is truely unique.
Thanks for the info about the book. I love Franklin quotes. Especially the down to earth, honest, simplicity of them. (Some fore fathers are really long winded. Brilliant but.. whoa..) Some of Franklin's quotes are quite comical
It's a republic and a republic is the will of the people according to the opinion of an educated class whose say is worth more than yours. China is also a republic. Trump didn't win the popular vote but he won anyway because the system is rigged to devalue the vote of commoners. Meritocracy is not democracy although being undemocratic does not necessarily entail merit..
And I say in the whole for a reason. I feel a whole lot differently about local voting, there are times and issues where the average man being overruled by the intelligent or by someone in a greater position of responsibility isn't the right thing to do.
I would say America always had a strong middle class because of the landgrab and later the world wars, that's what the republic stands on: Property-ownership and ease of opportunity. Security being easy to come by is why America didn't end up with a strongman leader. But that 300 year window where it was easier to be an American than anybody else is coming to a close.

The USA is, for the most part, as democratic as any other democratic country. That is, a cabal of political parties control the country, and money buys influence. Just the same as in any other democratic country.
There are some differences though. The one that leaps to mind is that a non-elected body (the Supreme Court) can over-rule Congress, the Senate, and the President. This is clearly undemocratic.
ooby_dooby: Sounds like you agree with me that the Electoral College has outlived its usefulness and should be scrapped. *1 citizen-one vote*
we in ohio vote for who we want to be elected president the primary election. one citizen - one vote.. the democrats even use votes then from the unborn and the deceased.
