Education does not equal genius, but nonetheless I would like someone with some common sense and direction.

Being educated doesn't make you a nice person, but if you are both educated to a certain level you can have slightly more 'interesting' discussions............ plus it's really fun to extract the urine from somebody who is truly stuck up their ivory tower a**! grin

I'd agree with you in general as "education" or "book smarts" does not automatically mean they have any common sense or are practical about everyday living, let alone even mechanically able to fix simple household items, nor would be deemed to be any sort of "genius" at anything; ie. accountants are deemed smart but most won't and can't cope with "creative book-keeping" to hide or cover certain profits and accounts...
Education is implying intelligence; possible knowledge of/ in many diverse topics and these many interests depends upon several things such as just what type of education one has and in what areas; a degree in basket weaving isn't the same as one in Political Science; nor is that one equivalent in any way to a degree in Medieval Literature which is a highly specialized and too narrow a field. One would be better off with a "Liberal Arts" program. That at least has no limits to any level and would certainly lead to a more interesting development of knowledge and character. Education does not automatically make a person "nicer", having higher degrees does not make nor guarantee that the person will be open minded, more sociable let alone more attractive or interesting,( I'm reminded of that everytime I look onto a mirror!)
In the final analysis, it all comes down to one's interests; the more you have in common and the levels of education in common, the better the chances of compatability and most importantly, being able to communicate with each other effectively without misinterpretating them. The advantages of degrees is that it does provide one with a proven way to think and to articulate; it doesn't mean however that it won't stiffel one's imagination if not eradicate your innate abilities to adapt to a world of constant change... Education is simply self improvement, certified or not.
Some of the most screwed-up and unhappy people I know or have ever met were all highly educated with several degrees...all in Philosophy. Can that be taken as a clue...a warning...?
For myself, I'm glad that I took another road, one far less travelled by anyone in their right mind and made my own. %)

Hallo Trish!! Hope you had a very nice Christmas und a good Solstice Day celebration!
About Philosophy...I started to notice a pattern among the older generation of my parents and this patten carried into mine about the ones that had majored in and all the various levels of degrees in it.
Most that I knew from all over the world, have turned out totally mixed up in regards to their ideals, beliefs, goals in life and their personal lives all total wrecks; their professional lives total disasters because they just could not ever make decisions and stick to them; constantly changing their views and perspectives, usually resulting in total confusion as to what to do, think, keep or get rid of in their lives. They all seemed to want to take all roads at the same times and they basically became mired in swamps of too much knowledge, too many perspectives; too many what-if's.
When I had to study it at university; even at high school level, I found it leading to utter mental chaos and dropped it as soon as I could. I'm thankful I did. All my other teachers agreed also...%D

hmmm -as I am doing social sciences I have a different perspective, of course.

Christmas was a bit of a disillusionment - but nothng less than expected haha

these patterns - yes, they are evident in each generation, aparently, of the baby booming progeny ( for want of a better word) they would have been seen in your parents even, to some evidence.

But, latterly, the daughters of my own generation have been coming to the fore - and they are some beautiful women - wow - you guys have no idea of the beauty thats awaiting you

Hey Ray - I wish you a Woman as beautiful as my daughters are

Yes, a very good post. Especially with regards:

'Some of the most screwed-up and unhappy people I know or have ever met were all highly educated with several degrees...all in Philosophy. Can that be taken as a clue...a warning...?'

I have seen fellow and femellow philosophers fall out like flies. The study of philosophy is not for the faint of heart, it is a system of natural selection in itself.
