FACT: The biggest rise in internet user groups, based on age,in the year 2007 was (wait for it)in the 2-4 year old age group catergory. Unbelievable, I know but true.
Would you be in favour of introducing an online safety education scheme into school curriculums worldwide.
The criteria (which i am atill working on and open to ideas and opinions) would consist of introducing the Internet and understanding the basics of safety whilst engaging in online activities. The modules would cover infants (this varies from country to country, aged 4 approx here in Ireland)right through to the completion of state education.
There would also be modules dealing specifically with PC/laptop security. I would feel that a one 30 minute class per week would cover all areas. One 30 minute class per week over a school year would calculate to approx 15 hours per year. I feel that this would be sufficent in giving children a great start to the internet, which is vast becoming more of a necessity than a luxury.
The tutors would need to approach the issue with honesty and they would have tutor in a sensitive caring manner. They must not frighten the children into thinking that the net is full of predators, that would be terrible and a total waste of time.
But most importantly children/teens/minors would be thought that the Internet is a great place and that by using proper safety education (proper online safety education and not from those idiots running cyber safe camps overcharging parents for inferior online safety education, who basically have no clue what they are teaching and are just scaring people away from the Internet)that they can have a very enjoyable, fun, informative experience.
Please dont post in that the economy is in a bad way and the tax payer should not have to bear the brunt for lousy parenting. It is the children of those lousy parents that are most vulnerable and at risk. It is those children that we must cater for. It is not the childs fault if the parents are alcoholics. drug users etc etc.and show no interest in their kids. It is those particular group of kids that are more likely to come to sites reaching out to strangers in the hope of a better life. It is those kids that society needs to help.
Any problems that occur in society, it is only in society that the solution can be found.
Thank you for voting, and please feel free to post in your ideas and opinions or state why you support this or why you would be against it. As I stated please do not use the "its the parents job" argument. It is the children of those parents that this specifically caters for.

Paul.
Yes they teach kids the good touch bad touch stuff at an early age...so I think it should be integrated with that kind of education....Luring...bullying all that kind of stuff and what to do about it....
It is included in American public education courses such as intro to computers, business law, accounting, etc...and also part of the orientation that students received when utilizing the technology available in the media centers.

That's a good thing..I don't think it is here but it should be...
There is great awareness of internet use taught in the School systems in AU. I however feel the majority of monitoring your children and advising them of the dangers of the WWW are laid in your own lap as parents.

We implement guidelines, for internet safety, however, I agree with Tina, it has to be down to the parents/carers.
Da10th: God forbid parents have to actually teach their kids something
Parents can teach them sure...BUT I think there is a lot more info available that kids should be learning....like the different things to watch for...just how they lure kids...what bullying is...what to do about it...more indepth info is available than a lot of parents might be aware of...so I don't think it hurts...

I just think the time in school can be used a little more wisely to teach academics of some kind more so than the lessons of life that parents should be teaching. I agree, it couldn't hurt, but again, I just feel something a little more worthwhile can be taught in that time.

Well in this techological age...I think it is useful and wise...there are soooo many things that kids need to be aware of these days on-line...I mean almost every kid must have a computer buy now or at least access to one...
