I do know that from your culture it is a form of respect and I have been written to many times from Gentlemen from your country and always they call me Dear....at first I thought God...that makes me sound so old but it is a form of respect so for this I am appreciative....

I agree in come countries it is used as a form of affectio,. Personal i hate it and find it condescending

It’s nice to be called ”dear” or “darling” when you know that people mean what they say. But everything depends on context – it indeed may sound patronizing and even humiliating.
It’s fine if people use my nick-name here, at least in the start of contact; or my real name if they know it.
My impression is that we misuse some nice words to that degree that when we really need to say something very nice, there’re no words for that anymore, every single one has already been worn out on bagatelles and lost its original meaning.
