Would you approve of our government legalizing drugs? Alcohol and cigarettes are legal and they also aremind-altering drugs, too! I think drugs should be legal as long as the government monitors the use of them and makes them legal to 18 or older only.

I think the government should stay the hell out of the drug business, no matter what form it is. The drug war is lost and will never be won. It's also costing the tax payers a fortune. Perhaps another reason America has more people incarcerated than any other country on the planet.
Drugs can be a great thing for the right people, but I see no point in legalizing them. A good argument for it would be quality control - you never know what's in whatever you're taking - but we don't need any more gov't involvement. It's like asking gov't to monitor instances of consumption of 10 or more alcoholic drinks per night - it's still as invasive as prohibition.
I guess what sort of makes these types of question funny is, people are doing the drugs anyway. So what is the point in a law that people are going to break anyway. Booze is legal, kills thousands of people every year, yet it's still legal. Prohibition didn't work for the same reasons that drug laws don't work.
i (just like most people might say) can't figure out y mary jane isn't legal when alcohol kills loooooots of people unlike pot....it just makes no sense. i personally can operate a car alooooooot more productively on bud than wen im drunk. later
They were! Look in history and why they became illegal. If they are made legal the same stuff will happen again. The shame is now that it is bad already while being illegal.

All 100% Organic Drugs should be Legalized, Taxed and regulated, just like Alcohol, Tubacco & Firearms...
All Pharmasuticals & Pharmachia should be Taxed and Regulated by The AMA...
All Petrolium based Pharmasuticals should be Outlawed and Their Manufactures should be Deported Forth With...
I grew up in the 1960's and I know GOOD DRUG's when I see them...

I’m really amazed by people who seem to think that drug use doesn’t affect the rest of society.
I agree with what you say, but the legalization of drugs would get rid of half the crimes you just listed.
If they were legal, there would be no crack houses, no crime to obtain money to buy drugs, no drug related arrests, and as for the other half; alcohol is probably a large percentage of those stats.

How does the legalization of drugs solve half? More than half of the stats listed involve the influence, noyt a crime to pay for it. You can't govern nor predict someone behavior on a controlled substance. Some who drink alcohol are fine, while others are violent. The same goes for illegal drug users.
Making drugs legal doesn't automatically eliminate or even reduce crime.

You really think so or were you being sarcastic? I don't see the connection personally. Could you explain it to me?
If crack is legal, that doesn't make crack users all the sudden wealthy enough to afford their habit... Legal or not, they would continue to commit crime to get the money to support their drug use.
I don't understand how legalizing meth labs would make them quit exploding, or how legalizing crack will stop birth defects, or how legalizing drugs would make people quit using them before work, or how legalizing coke will make parents quit fighting and hurting their kids, etc..
Very few of the crimes listed above were charges for drug trafficking or simple use or possession of drugs. Most of them were violent crimes and property crimes committed by people under the influence of drugs or people trying to get money for their drug habit.
Alcohol may have played a role in some, but not many, as most of them specifically say "illicit" or "illegal" drug use, or "narcotic" or "marijuana"...
I truly don't understand how legalizing drugs would reduce the injury to society when someone using that drug hurts others.
Yeah the big pharma has nothing to do with, LMFAO!! I have never heard of people being addicted to oxy painkillers committing any crimes because they are legal. Give me a break.
all things were placed on this earth to be used .. ALL THINGS ... even things some people dont like ... some like spinach others dont ... does that mean ban spinach ... if most people dont like spinach ...
the legalization of some areas is nothing more than the govt saying i got your money ... i tell u what hospital to go to ... i tell u what doctor to see ... and more ....
it has NOTHING to do with legalization .... its all MONEY ....
prohibiton ... no one could drink a beer ... then THEY changed it ... then they changed it again ....
so that states no morality in things ... just MONEY ....
money buys the laws ...
its the USE or the MIS USE ... the REAL factor ....
do u watch tv too much ... then thats a vice ... do u smile too much even that some would call it illegal ... on and on ... all things ...ban or not to ban ....
it has nothing to do with LEGALITY ... it only in USE or MIS USE ....
to ban something means u dont know how to control yourself ... to use it or not to use it ....
its called CENSORSHIP ...
if we have choices ... then we choose ... and if we choose within ourselves then we are whole ....
but we do not have choices ... then we r controlled ... and if we are controlled ... others tell u your heart and soul ... wheather u like it or not .... u must DO ...

Ddidn;t want to quote your whole post but very well put.
I would only add that a law which is not enforcable is not worth having. We have demonstrated time and time again there is very little interest and certainly little success in the so called war on drugs,
We could use that money much more effectively in education, prevention and treatment. I think most people are capable of making sound decisions.
The pharmaceutical industry is alreay the biggest evil doer, with government approval.
Yeah...you can't even watch tv without some pharmacutical company peddling a "prescription" drug at you. I thought doctors were supposed to diagnose illnesses and prescibe the needed medicine if needed. The sad thing is that the pharmecuticals give kickbacks the more their "pills" are prescribed which I thinkn leads some doctors to prescribe medicine that is not even need at all.
Lionhearted1967: Of all the fatcs you listed, I am sure that marijuana wasn't the illegal frug being referenced to. You also have to take into account alcohol which IS legal.
no it couldnt be pot ......... hey girl how ya doing today
Ya know I grew up with that stuff and didnt care one way or another which way it would go. however-------- If a person can say that alcohol causes so much damage- which I would not argue about, I have seen the results , and am greatly aware of the carnage that is alcohol related, so if this is so ugly - why would we willingly put another drug out there to get so freely? its like 2 wrongs dont make a right, I have worked as an EMT and in a drug rehab clinic also in law enforcement, I've seen the results of alcohol and drugs and most people when they use dont just use one substance ( drug of choice) and you know what -- there are those who over use no matter what legal or not , the only thing is that sometimes people do obey the law and dont do a substance that they know is illegal, if that can stop some of the carnage , I say it is still a good thing . when I was younger I would have been on the other side of this debate I have watched too many people die from use to be able in all good conscience to say what is the difference.
