Can you please clarify the question... should Texas secede? Can Texas secede? Would Texas be better off if it seceded?
Hey if Texas did secede from the Union, then we'd be eligible for Foreign Aid just like the Israelies and India and Pakastan and just about every other country in the world!
Now there's a thought!

Don't take it so personal, the mass majority of Texans love the United States of America,... it was just a question directed at Texans.
The word is "secession". "Succession" refers to dynastic succession - as in, which prince becomes the next king. Oh, and by the way - I am a Texan, and Gov. Perry is a worthless @$$#o/e!!!

Woody has it correct- there has to be provision in the US Constitution allowing it. If we were to leave we would be at the bottom of Western Nations in reading, literacy, as well as math and science skills.

Tony - did you see my point about Texas, if it became a separate nation, would rank near the bottom of the civilized world in literacy?
You claim you don't like others whining and blaming, instead they should take personal responsibility.
Why don't you take personal responsibility and learn how to construct a decent sentence? You really have no clue about the ideological under-pinnings of socialism and communism- you simply hear people say it and then repeat it.
Finally you are also clueless about the constitution, and if I asked you to elaborate as to what section of the constitution allowed us to break away, you'd be dumbfounded.
Meanwhile instead of complaining, take an adult education class in order to do your share to help Texas rise from the bottom 5 in literacy.
the level of ignorance displayed in this thread speaks volumes about the low quality of education in Texas. the misspelled thread title alone is sufficient evidence of this. the majority of comments also support the assertion.
ok, class, let's review. there is NO provision for secession in the Texas constitution.
it's really amusing when people just make crap up and then expect others to think that you're making an 'intelligent' contribution to the discussion. please...try using the internet, you might avoid embarrassing yourself.
there is, however, language in the state constitution that allows for Texas to become five states.
There is no law forbidding or allowing secession. If Texas decides to secede, the resulting peaceful separation or war will depend not on law, but on the will of whomever happens to be Commander-in-Chief at the time.
The current Texas Constitutions state that political power is inherent in the people and (just as the Declaration of Independence declares) "the people have the right to alter their government in such manner as they might think proper."
Texas was once recognized as independent nation, before choosing to join the Union. The voluntary decision to join the Union did not come with an explicit agreement that they could never leave.
The US Constitution is silent on the issue of secession. There is no provision in the Texas Constitution (current or former) that reserves the right of secession, but it does state that "Texas is a free and independent State, subject only to the Constitution of the United States" ... not to the President of the US or even the Congress of the US.
you'all should study up on your history. vermont was the first county to join the united states of america . it wasnt one of the 13 colonies or original states and vermont has a right to succeed from the union. because of that. when texas was made part of the union. they made sure texas DID NOT have a right to succeed . so if all you texans dont want to be part of the united states either leave america or move to vermont and succeed from the union. if you can get the vermonters to put it on the ballot. there have been times whether to remain in the union or not was on the ballot. but was always soundly defeated.

Everybody has a different spin on this issue... beats me either way, but I sure do like the idea of a Republic of Texas!
TGIF and have a Happy Labor Day!

Well Mike its no wonder - that the low educational status Texas would have it if were on its own- doesn't bother you. Educated people would leave but no problem as that doesn't include you.
I'd love to hear your constitutional arguments, but then again my pet possum could probably articulate them better.
From what we learned in school Texas still has the power to secede. they signed into the U.S. with the agreement that they could still secede at any time. The U.S. is going downhill steadily. I support my country and our troops but no the government. And little by little the more I want to move to another country. I hope Texas secedes and if so, I'll stay. GO TEXAS!
gppark: My freinds talk about this all the time and I want to know what Texans truly think. TEXANS ONLY PLEASE
We have most of what we need, and politicians that make a little more sense than those in Washington. There would be problems but we could work them out. The biggest probem would be with all the other people, from all over the US, wanting to move to Texas.

There is no provision prohibiting it either. If you're so unhappy here why don't you go somewhere else, maybe to the mountains of Arkansas.

Our biggest problem would be the people wanting to move here from all over the US. They're already moving here now, getting out of the northern states especially, guess they found out things are somewhat better here than elsewhere.

Woodsywizz: No, it's NOT written in. Refer to Constitution, United States.
Refer to Texas Constitution, it says that we are entitled to a republic government, if we fail to get that we are allowed to get rid of it and set up a new government.
