From my limited knowledge and hearsay on this subject ...... I gather it is pretty recent, and without long-term studies involved ... Like could it interfere with the delicate mechanisms in organic bodies ?(you)....... What could happen in about the 3rd generation of consuming this food? (in twenty years time).

The plants will be hybrids, no seeds, so plant life will begin to depend on laboratories supplying it.

What will happen with cross polination from these plants done by bees/ants/other insects?

Its going to affect Bio crops making them impure too.

Will they be lacking in certain essential nutrients?

Have all these questions been satisfactorily answered?

Or does everyone just Go With The Flow?

Okay, I`ve cast my vote.... Not impressed AT ALL with this manipulation!

Cancer cells are already out of control ...... supplying genetically altered food .......is that going to worsen the situation?

People battle to eat (or afford) organic foodstuffs, and its agreed that all the synthetic fertilizers/herbicides in fresh foods, and additives in supermarket food is the cause of major modern health problems........ SO.... where are we going now?dunno

And yes, the GM corn-fed beef and drug-fed poultry have already been linked with cancer. I won't be surprised if GM foods are linked directly to it in the near future. I grow my own organic herbs, and will start growing my own organic veggies next year. And in a few years, my SO and I hope to be living somewhere else with a very sustainable life with my own chickens and whatever else we can do to provide our own food and know that it's safe. (There's more to that plan, but it's OT, so I'll leave it at that.)

You are right to be concerned, Smoky. wine

I've been an Organic gardener for years. There is no comparison with commercial produce and much of what is sold for Organic-at high prices-is not.
Compare Venison to Beef. The difference in fat content is obvious.
Your concerns are very real. And likely to be compounded in the Brave New World ahead.

Yes, Wonder, it's definitely better to grow your own because then you know for sure how it's grown. And venison is the healthiest red meat there is, no doubt...but unless I take up hunting, I'm not going to get any of it. And I have no plans to take up hunting. moping

Not just the method of cultivatio Dru but the varieties you can choose.
Example:commercial Tomatoes are derived for thick skin, large cores and little juice. So they travel to market with less bruising. Not to mention they are harvested green and as hard as a baseball then forced to turn red[not ripen] by exposure to ethylene gas.
Remember Shirley49's thread on her Brandywines? An Heirloom variety of the highest quality grown out back and vine-ripened.
Small wonder the kids dont like veggies. They've never tasted any.

When you have your garden you will discover how popular your provender quickly becomes. Then you can barter for wild meat and fish if you choose.

I have to say that the organic produce I buy here doesn't fit your tomato description at all...and it's how I know that they really are different from the non-organic ones. They have taste! yay

And you're correct...hard to like food that lacks taste and sweetness. Amazing, but if you cut sugars and processed (sweetened) foods out of your diet, and your sugars come from organic fruits and veggies, they suddenly taste a lot sweeter! It's amazing!

And I'll keep Brandywines in mind, then. Believe me, researching heirloom varieties so that I'm not growing GM foods is going to be one of my winter projects. And I'll see if I can barter...I do know some single men that rent apartments w/o the ability to garden, but do hunt. Hmmm...hadn't thought of that benefit. Thank you, Wonder! cool wine

Hiy Smoky Hun wave

This genetically modified stuff is trouble in the long run (IMO) It isnt just the immediate effects either as you say, farmers who notice the effects of cross pollination on their crops are liable for fines from companies such as monsanto for illegally growing various strains of whichever veggies - its more than bizarre and I say thanks for raising this issue thumbs up wave

The GMO foods that bother me the most are those that have been mixed with poisonous plants to keep the bugs off them and then we eat that food and we expect not to have a reaction to it.

I just stick to heirloom organic foods. Grow my own each year and the ones I can't grow I will buy, but I always make sure I am eating organic foods.

When I was a teen I had very bad reactions to various foods and nobody could figure out why, till after several years of seeing specialists a very good doctor found the problem. I was having reactions to various GMO foods as well as the Chemical additives.
I was put on a strict organic food diet and I was never sick again, in fact I have not been sick in over 20 years now, not even a cold or flu. Is that freaky or what?

As for the chemical additives in foods, most of them have a CAS number that you can find exactly what the chemical hazards are to humans and the environment. Like High Fructose Corn Syrup and other names you cannot pronounce on cans and bottles, just type in the name in google with the letters CAS after the chemical and see what comes up. Pretty scary what people are eating today.

Genetic engineering is the largest food experiment in the history of the world. We are all the guinea pigs.

As a result, 60-70% of the foods on your grocery shelves contain genetically engineered (GE) components.

Genetically engineered foods contain substances that have never been a part of the human food supply. They are not subjected to rigorous pre-market safety testing. And THEY ARE NOT LABELED.

Is genetic engineering safe for you and your family? Safe for the environment? Safe for the future of mankind? NO long-term studies have been done. No one can answer these questions.NO ONE WILLconfused confused confused

Thanks to the above for their MOST interesting and enlightened comments!

11 don`t care, are not concerned, or resigned to it.

No wonder the world is in the mess it is ....... almost half the people would prefer to just go with the flow dictated by the guys in big business?...... buy their anti-cancer drugs and support the pharmaceutical companies (medicines and food).....?

And on the other side .... WELL DONE to those who are AWARE!thumbs up

I`m realy getting sick and tired of the whingers in society who`s perpetual lament is "there is SO much cancer and strange new illnesses around these days ......"... Catch a wake-up!

I think the thing I am most concerned about with the genitically modified foods it that they can't be contained. . . the pollination issue. How can we possibly be sure our own homegrown, organic and heirloom plants don't get polluted? If the people who want to experiment could do so without putting others at risk and subjecting them to the same risks they are taking, I'd be less concerned. I am, however, very concerned about the lack of respect for others. Once this decision was made, there is no way to keep it separate from other non-modified food plants.

A century ago there was significant food available to collect or glean from undeveloped lands. It is diminished to nothing and the kids dont even recognize it.
Fish and game are "managed",more for sport than food.
There was a managed Deer hunt on Thief Neck Island in the Tennessee River--Down Stream From the Federal Installation at OAK RIDGE--
Someone thought to take a Geiger Counter to the checking station staffed by the Game and Fish agency.A third of the animals were "HOT" from the Oak Ridge ground water.
The hunt was cancelled.

smoky: EXACTLY! And so, unless you`ve memorised the quantity you can ingest .... maybe the NEXT canned item ALSO has the same ingredient - and the next, and the next....! And by the end of the day you`ve O/D`d.

I had a relative who was suffering mysterious stomach pains, and found they`d been prescribed a "new" asthma inhaler. Researching some info on it ...... I found it was in its first stages of being tested on humans ... It had passed its lab tests and was OK`d for trials now by doctors....... to monitor its "success". (The stomach pains were part of the side-effects). Sooooo, NOT all medicines prescribed are SAFE - they have just succeeded in not killing any more laboratory animals.......

The Golden rulegrin

I have been reading about the dying Bees, seems fairly certain now that a specific crop spray has caused bees to loose their ability to shrug off a parasite, this parasite is present in all hives but usually causes no problems, now however it is killing the bees, unless we stop this parasite, the population of bees will die throughout the western world, europe and North/South America are infected. The death of bees will have untold damage on human food sources as bees pollinate more crops/fruit etc than any other insect.

thumbs up thumbs up

I am also surprised California hasn't banned any hazardous foods yet, since they are heavy into air pollution, non-smoking and just about every environmental issue, but food they are just scarfing down and nothing said about it. Wonder when they will wake up and start a ban on deadly chemicals in the food as well.

If the food industry sold healthy foods, there would be no use for a health care plan since very few people would get sick. Most people who get sick are those who ingested hazardous chemicals that caused cancers, cause tumors, stomach legions, ulcers, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, kidney and liver diseases, blood diseases, and a ton of things including asthma and lung diseases just from the food they ate that had dangerous chemicals in it.

But..how long before more people demand healthier foods on the shelves and will it be too late then when GMO foods take over the crops and trying to reproduce heirloom foods is going to take longer each year. Just with High Fructose Corn Syrup, there was a study and most people eat about 64 pounds of it each year, which is ten times the sugar in starch than regular sugar in one teaspoon. Then people wonder why they can't stay thin, because the starch turns to sugar and turns to fat. That is the main cause of obesity in the USA is modified Corn starch, corn starch, High Fructose Corn syrup (all mean the same thing, but labeled differently on labels.)

But you are right, we have to research everything to know the truth since the food industry and the FDA doesn't even tell you the slightest dangers from these chemicals they allowed in your foods. It is like we are on a chemical diet.
Not me, I refuse to eat garbage created in a lab.

At the end of next month Codex Alimentarius goes into effect. And it will become nearly impossible to protect one's self from contaminated food.

Like the honeybees, despite our numbers, we will soon be an endangered species, totally at the mercy of the technocrats.

Okay, this is about where in the conversation my family banish me to the cellar insisting they heard the sound of corks poppin in my ginger beer bottles............ What if .... What if ...... just say what if ...... using "stuff" to kill off bees is making way for the GM foods?

If the scientists inventing the sprays are SO dumb as to not know their poisons are going to affect the bees ........ doh .... nah, realy? Are they dumb? How did they get to be "scientists"?

Is likened, in my mind, to the "Swineflu" innoculation hype. Too many overpopulated countries ... dwindling resources ...... longevity upsetting the finances ...... un-employment ratios ......

Oopps, can hear those corks a popping down in the cellar - gotta go!

This is how it works. it's called POWER and CONTROL, same-old, same-old. Monsanto has engineered the crop seed it sells to farmers, so that it cannot reproduce itself for the next year. Which means farmers are forever forced to buy fresh supplies from Monsanto. That's damn clever, if you want to dominate the world's food source, and hold the consumer to ransom. Here's more:

Biotechnology is not going to help us eradicate world hunger. Obviously, world hunger is a very big concern, but food scarcity is not the root cause of starvation. According to the UN World Food Program, there is more than enough food produced in the world to feed everyone on earth a healthy diet. The reason this doesn't occur is that nearly 800 million people do not have access to food because they can't afford it or they cannot grow it themselves.

Biotech companies purport that GM crops will rebuild third world economies. So far, this has yet to be seen. In fact, the opposite seems to be occurring. The foundation of genetic engineering has turned the seeds themselves into "intellectual property," so that the farmers planting the seeds don't even technically own them. This new arrangement makes it against the law to save seeds from year to year, something commonly done in third world countries. This places farmers in the position of returning year after year to purchase seeds. Imagine what a financial burden this would create for struggling farmers. Monsanto recently brought this to a head by actually hiring private investigators to take samples of plants from fields of farmers they suspected didn't buy their seeds. Monsanto has also encouraged neighbor to give up neighbor if planting GM seeds without paying for them is suspected.

By turning GM seeds into intellectual property, agribusiness corporations have taken another huge step toward control over the food resources and instead of eradicating world hunger, biotechnology will likely increase it by increasing dependence on the corporate seed companies.
