I agree. I blame the government. You would say something if it was all because of the recession but it seems to me that the health system in Ireland was mis-managed even before the recession hit.
Don't isolate Mary Harney in this. She is an independent now, FF could get rid of her if they wanted, they just want her to take all the blame. I have no time for Harney but it is the collective responsibility of the whole government. Not just her.

I agree the doctors, nurses and specialists are not the problem or any of the staff on the ground in the HSE its the paper pushers at the top that make all the stupid decisions.
well the doctors and nurses are doing a wonderul job and they one of the most highly trained in Europe in this country but they are being put under awful pressure by the government and that mary harney one needs to be sacked plain and simple..
one of my closest friends is a nurse and she has been attacked and assaulted so many times by patients ad stabbed with needles from junkies.. its horrible to sit and listen to her stories and its not just her all the nurses get the same treatment from certain patients and they do a fantastic job and try help us.. i think that nurses and doc getting a cut in their money is terribl as they are saving lives and are doing a fab job at it too

Seconded. The health system here is brilliant; the only problem is getting to it for your treatment. However, with our collective public servants's running the roost as they do, nothing gets done due to bureaucrats and pen pushing Sir Humphrey's and until there is a clear out in the middle ranks, it will not get any better. Swap desks for beds, that's what I say.
I attended a post mortem exam yesterday as part of my work placement.......totally bricking it as i thought i was going to end up on the floor but it was amazing.........its one thing to learn about it all in a book or from the tv but to see the body and its systems up front was just amazing....it gave me such a new found respect for doctors and the work they carry out........never again will i say "oh thats just a routine procedure".......nothing easy about it.........certainly not something your going to learn in general book from ebay....

Jaysus, you look fine for someone who's just had a post mortem!
I can understand the thinking about a single management structure is the HSE. Why have a different set of accountants, managers, HR etc for every board.
However, they put this in place and kept the old structure intact leaving us just with an extra level of burocracy.
I have been in hospital for operations twice in the last 10 years and more recently for my diabetes. The frontline staff I must say are second to none. I watched nurses working understaffed wards continuously for 11 hours at a time never stopping between and I was astonished.
So I have nothing but praise for the dedication of the medical and surgical staff and the lower level admin who make it all happen.
And I do concur, that Mary Harney seems to be an absolute disaster. One of the problems with PR sadly is that people like her achieve power with no mandate. But I would guess that nobody else wants the job.
