I can think of a number of excellent female vocalists over the years. Hard to say which one is best though. One of my more recent favorite female vocalists is the lovely and talented Lisa Kelly. I think she has a better voice than any of the ladies on the list that was shown.
What about Kelly Clarkson, one of the youngest.....
uses effects and voice overdubs which were all not available to the older vocalists. Janis Joplin was the best all rounder for me untill I heard Kelly.........and she could still be around for a long time......
9 chart hits from one Album..You gotta give her writters credit also.... there is no other that I know of to top that in Female vocalists......

Not of personal taste but of achievement......
Yes you are right about kelly ......
Because of you i never stray too far from the sidewalk, Because of you i learnt play on the same side so i dont get hurt...... now it playing in my head......
doesn't seem to much here about people who poyr their heart out in song...where you can actually feel the pain and the hurt!. Some great singers, but I go for the gut. Where the pain pours out, and you fell like hanging yourself after hearing the pain in their voices...K.D. Lang," Three Cigarettes"
