No, they don't have the money to make a change. that's why their situation is so desperate. a billion dollars will not do nearly enough.

You know, I feel really sorry for those people and what theyve had to go through, But I got to say that I dont see many of the people there doing much to help their situation. Every time I see a news cast about it they are either rioting , or looting, or sitting on their butts ,just waiting for the aid personal to help them.
well Im sure theres a few examples I havent seen, but the indigineous people there in general. and Im talking about the guys, yep I see the women trying to cook and feed their kids and washing and looking after their kids etc.
Dont get me wrong Im NOT a rascist, Just seems that the whole culture there is short on some intelligent and useful ways to help.
I can recall other earthquake disasters in the U.S.A, and saw a whole lot of people helping each other, dont see much of that going on there right now.
Im Just praying for them and hoping that they get all the need they can get, and Hopefully in time the place is rebuilt, By who I havent got a clue.Only from outside countries like U.S.A etc.
What a terrible tragedy, I really am sad for them.

i guess you missed all those reports about the survivors digging through rubble with their bare hands to rescue people. or the doctors and nurses operating in the open because the hospital collapsed. or the kitchens that were operating until the food ran out. it's easy to sit back and judge but a comparison with america is ridiculous. they have an infrustructure and the wealth to provide emergency services. haiti doesn't. of course there's looting. what else should people do when there's no one to help? sit and starve? i know what i;d be doing if i was in that situation. i'd be out smashing in the windows of the nearest supermarket if it meant i'd get food and water. so would you. so would everyone on here.

your - right , and Im not going to argue about what you say, but what about those fighting each other? like pack of wild animals, and I did see some of them digging like you mention.
what else should people do when there's no one to help?
well they might start to help themselves in a more orderly humane fashion, and yep I know Im going to get some stick about my views.
and I guess the criminal element that escaped from those prisons havent helped the situation, thinking about it in retrospect.

They riot because thier government is so corrupt, I hate to be so sinical that I wouldn't give to them with the thought its not going to help. Hopefully through this tragedy the spot light will dwell on Haiti and people will do more to invest in that country and maybe create jobs. One can only pray and hope for Haiti's future.peace

well, the fighting and the gang factions will always happen when there's no law or order to prevent those people. it happened in New Orleans and it happened after the tsunami. it's an ideal time for criminals to operate. other instances of fighting have occured because of a lack of food/water. desperate people will do anything to survive. there have been several reports of cannibalism although the media isn't reporting that too much. it's easy for us to wonder why these people don't act in a more humane fashion but then look at what happens when we have petrol shortages. or how quickly our infrastructure falls apart when we have a drop of snow. those are just minor things but even then we see reports of people fighting in garages or at stations trying to get the last train home. imagine what would happen here if we had something on the scale of haiti.

Wether or not the Haitians will rebuild and improve their lot is for the future to decide. But can you imagine a world, where countries did not offer any aid at all to one another? It would be exactly the same if the house next to you had a fire, and you would offer no assistance. We all belong in this world wether we like each other or not. When charity dies, we die along with it.

Well said.
I do not believe the country will be any better after we rebuild it. It has always been a cesspool. We rebuilt it a couple of times before already. Having said that, we can not sit by and watch children starve, no matter how worthless the country as whole is.

I'm not gonna get down on you for your opinion SMFY. Just put yourself into their shoes and tell me what you would do if you were starving and dying of thirst and the food and water were just feet away from you and not being given to anyone? Of course they are rioting and looting. They are fighting for their lives and their childrens lives.

Now, i'm an old rescue guy.. i used to do that sort of stuff for the american red cross decades ago. Back when disaters were handled by people who knew how to help people. This fiasco they are having now is just vastly worsened by the lack of organization on the part of the US. I voulenteered to send a 40 man rescue crew in there 2 hours after the quake and they told me to stay away. All they wanted was money. I had a plane sitting on the runway with a C-120 cargo plane ready to be loaded. And all the machinery i would need just a half a block away. This is the reason you're getting the rioting and looting. Because our leaders are so inept at handling anything. Much less a disaster. And since they are the ones with the guns.. who am i to argue with the way they are handling it? It's just a complete disaster on top of a disaster compounded by politics and yes the government of haiti was corrupt too. It was getting better though.. and by the time one 1/100th of that billion trickles it's way down to help them rebuild they will have a slightly better standard of living there. After all you can't get it any worse even as inept as our response is. Anything is better than eating dirt cookies just to have something to fill your stomach. And they had that standard of living before the quake. 80% of the people in Port au Prince were making less than a dollar a day before. At least being paid $100 a day to pick up dead bodies will make some people have more than they've ever had in their lives.

Maybe the U.S needs to take care of its own after all the unemployment rate has reached 10.1% thanks to the great hope and change while at the same time they claim that there are new jobs which is Horse puckey.

Many here who are un-employed have college degrees and are unable to find work. Before sending Billions to other countries maybe they need to help their own citizens because frankly as a tax payer i don't have the money to fit others bills. Call me whatever you please.

If you look at the history of Haiti:

Especially from the Duvalier era to the present you will see that the people of Haiti have been screwed over repeatedly.

As far as the damage resulting from the earthquake, that is what you get in a society with absolutely no building codes.

Rebuilding Haiti is a waste of time and money if the Haitian government, whatever that is, doesn't put at least minimal building codes in place.
