I'd like to have a dog but where I live now my landladies yard isn't fenced in and my apt isn't big enough.Besides with the vet costs and having to put another dog to sleep(which made me feel like a complete murderer) I'd rather not have a pet.

The smaller the better, cost less to feed and don’t need big doggy bags but

Cats make the best friends because they follow you everywhere and sleep in your bed. If you slept with a rat, you'd squish it or it would chew a hole in your mattress. Dogs have to be walked every day. A lot of cats will go in the litter box every single time. Dogs barking in your yard can get you into trouble. Cats are quiet. Dogs can trash a house in seconds flat and they can go through window glass trying to kill mail men. Cats just attack your ankles.

While growing up, we always had animals, cats, dogs and most of the rodents.
One time I even bred white rats so I could have store credit when I took the young into the pet shop. It helped getting food and other stuff
Maybe someday I'll have another white rat. They make excellent pets. They love having their bellies scratched and will click their teeth together to show they are happy.

i love cats too for all the same reasons, am thinking of a standard poodle though....

Rats are one of THE most loving animals you can find. Mine was house trained (no cage) slept on my bed and would bound down the stairs, climb my clothes and snuffle in my ear when I came home.
The negative thing is that they live for such a short time - maybe 2 years. It's too much hurt too often.

Nooo - you hear 'rat' you see 'plague infested, gray, wet, viscious thing'.
Mine was cream and beige and she was like the world's smallest lap dog. Much more affectionate that most cats, brighter than many dogs, but too short lived. I had two in succession. Losing two friends/pets both across about 3 years was too much at my young and tender age. So I'd not want to do it again.
They can also be perfect 'first' pets for kids as they are introduced to responsibility, care, death and animal love (oo-er) in a small, manageable way.
