Do you tend to do everything via the terminal command line? - like in the picture? Hey, wait a minute!, why does your window have a menu at the top? Where's the menu across the top of the screen? Why do you have ugly-PC-like keyboard menu shortcuts?

Most definitely it is the Ubuntu! That is because of the World Cup Soccer being held in South Africa. Everyone knows the Ubuntu are getting free tickets and Hygiene packs.drinking

@Smoky: yea the name means something in african. Don't ask me what. doh

@inwestend: I'm using mainly Linux since i lost all my data back on Win98. I only use the term for copy, search, navigation etc. because I'm simply faster. But usually I'm to lazy to read manpages and use the GUI. Nowadays most apps have a GUI.
The desktop is only two days old...after some months it's usually fully cluttered with starters etc. Still some configuration needed and i also create a second KDE desktop to switch. ( because I like the interactive earth )

@Everybody: This is Ubuntu 10.04 with cairo-dock OSX default theme and mac4lin. Check out the youtube tutorials.
The easiest Linux I've ever used in the last 12 years. I only feel sorry for my Windows fellows.

Ubuntu all day long.....!! I've been using it for a couple of years and would NEVER go back to Windows..!! I'm currently using 9.04.

And Smoky you should be using it with your background ...read this about the word: Ubuntu is a South African ethical ideology focusing on
people's allegiances and relations with each other. The
word comes from the Zulu and Xhosa languages. Ubuntu
is seen as a
traditional African concept, is regarded as one of the
founding principles of the new republic of South Africa
and is connected to the idea of an African Renaissance.

A rough translation of the principle of Ubuntu is
"humanity towards others". Another
translation could be: "the belief in a
universal bond of sharing that connects all
humanity".

Don't know what happened with all that space at the end of my last post...!!! sorry about that.

Smoky I forgot to add this bit: "A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed."

Ahhh! - that's why it didn't look right. I was also puzzled about the firefox label above the safari icon, and how you got something to the right of the waste paper basket. You're not using MacOS at all. Just something that looks like it.

Does linux interpret track pad gestures like MacOS? This is a feature I couldn't live without. Swipes to switch applications or to use "expose". Pinch and rotate gestures for scaling and resizing things.

I've always felt sorry for Windows fellows too.

Personally, I dual-boot vista x64 and linux mint (which is basically a more polished and stable ubuntu with codecs included).

I actually don't mind vista - but then I bought the sort of computer it was designed for - a core 2 quad with 4GB of ram and a decent (though not high-end) graphics card.

Ultimately my plan is to move to linux full-time and to learn programming so I don't need to visit a repair shop.

I just need to fetch the wine packages one of these days and the build-essentials (no net at home currently, which means I have to use web kiosks.

How would programming enable you to do repairs?

If I Mac ever fails - it's likely to be a hardware fault, and serious! Otherwise a Mac never fails.

I know that Eclipse is available on Linux, but the two applications that I use most don't run on Linux (as far as I know - correct me if I'm wrong).

1. Adobe Flex (Flash Builder) - There was a dodgy beta, I don't think it was developed further.

2. Apple XCode

Not Leopard, not Ubuntu and not Windows so..
Many other Linux distros (e.g. Sidux, Debian, Sabayon, PCLinuxOs etc...). Why ?
Because Leopard and Windows are "closed" and because Ubuntu is (slowly) working on the Windows way. That is of course my personal opinion.
The best, for me, should be BSD but.. is not ready for end users (Debian is planning to build a distro under BSD kernel).
I love freedom so.. I reject everything is closed.

You are right (partially) saying many applications are missing in Linux.
"Normal" people use only the 10% of applications available under Linux.
OpenOffice is much more flexible than Microsoft Office.
Programming ?
in Gui you have QDevelop, KDevelop, QT_creator etc..
in Console, the limit is your fantasy and capacity (lot of helps included)
Very difficult to completely freeze a Linux PC.
And..and..and.........
Anyway, I think Linux is a very nice OS and.. FREE ! I am not talking about only money but Freedom.
I am using Linux from a long time, tested many Distros and I want to repeat now: FREEDOM IS PRICELESS !
Maybe people like to "execute" what decided someone else ?

Wonderful man is Desmond Tutu, and I have great respect for his type of talk.

If the aBantu (= "the people") only practiced uBuntu - what Rev Tutu preached - I would still be living in my own country.

But I still prefer this land where I am now ..... I guess going back to one`s ancient roots is what life is all about ....?

ThePirate: OpenOffice is much more flexible than Microsoft Office.

I wouldn't touch M$ anything with a barge pole anyway. Besides, I rarely do anything office-like. I still use an old copy of good ol' reliable and lightweight Apple Works. (Such a pity it was discontinued, although iWork is utterly cool).

Sounds like fun... but my point was the IDEs that I get PAID to use are absent under Linux.

ThePirate: Very difficult to completely freeze a Linux PC.

What are you comparing it to exactly?? I remember coding C++ on a Mac Quadra back in the 90s, which sometimes necessitated pressing the reset switch.

This is really the point that I'd like to debate. The price of this freedom. On a personal level, I'm DELIGHTED that can execute what someone else has put tremendous effort into perfecting. Because I don't want to get involved in the nitty gritty of the Operating System. I just need it to be reliable, time-saving, and always on my side. Apple's incredible attention to detail and high standards result in a very productive user experience for me.

My second point about freedom is that I’ve rarely seen open-development innovate and popularise anything really new and different. This is why I prefer closed, proprietary, patented, and commercially driven technologies. I’m no tree-hugging free and open idealist. I’ve never seen the open approach plant the seed of innovation. The open approach is only successful when the paradigm had already been defined by (closed architecture) commercially driven innovation pushing the envelope and creating the future.

( Although I am a PHP affection-ado, with enough experience of M$ .net to really loathe this commercial alternative. )

Tuffy....you use windows because it's easier to work with unless you brain has been reformatted (not a reflection on you or any one)..but it's easier to the eye..

What confused
I'm developing commercial applications on Linux. Yea on Linux but I compile also on Linux for Windows & Mac. Probably you'll never understand on how to do so. comfort

Uhmm the 3D Linux desktop was a little buggy until recently. But
resetting from another console is faster than killing a process on Windows. MAC don't have other tty consoles...what a pitty. comfort

Install Ubuntu. I use it because:
- it never crashes
- no viruses
- i can run also 99% of all Windows applications either with
WINE or VirtualBox.

That's nonsense. Without OpenSource we would still be sitting with a buggy NT4 Windows and horrible expensive Antivirus and Office etc.
Even Mac switched to a BSD/Linux hybrid as with OSX!

( Although I am a PHP affection-ado, with enough experience of M$ .net to really loathe this commercial alternative. )

I simply don't use .NET anymore, even if i could.

I feel even more sorry for MAC freaks than for M$ users. But that's probably as I prefer a nice house to a Porsche. Who buys I-pad by the way?

@ahso47. I can tell that English is not your native language, so I can forgive you for missing my points, and filling in the gaps with your own imagination. After all, it's much easier to win an argument with yourself.

When I said that Linux didn't run the two applications I use most (Flex and Xcode) I never said you couldn't write programs on it. I never denied the existence of cross compilers. You put these words in my mouth.

When I cited my experience 15 or so years ago of using a Mac Quadra... I was clearly saying that the old reset button and freezes are ANCIENT HISTORY. Any modern protected-memory operating system won't freeze or crash completely. Linux is not alone in this respect. So what on earth are comparing it to? Old technology, obviously.

And why on earth makes you think I can't open multiple terminal windows on a Mac?! Have you actually used a Mac? I've used Linux. I've even taught programming based on Linux.

I can forgive you for not knowing that Unix was conceived at AT&T, about twenty years before its open source development took off.

What I can't forgive is how rude and condescending your reply was. It's like something that a American teenager with a bad attitude would write. Did you assume that you were dealing with an idiot? You don't even have a bachelors degree, so what makes you think you can respond with so little reverence to a former university lecturer in software engineering? A fellow professional who is probably as well respected within the industry ( if not more so ) than you. I would have expected a little more professional decorum, and a little more thought behind your response.
