Life begins at conception - that' s non-controversially true. The controversy consists of assigning value to the fetus at various stages of development - that is, at what point does it become a "person" with attendant rights?
I originally believed that life began at birth because that was when the life could be sustained on its own. Until then, it was like an appendage of the mother.
However, since then I have come to believe this is not true. Ever since the introduction of the first test tube baby. Once the egg is fertilized, it continues to grow outside the mothers body. Even if the egg is implanted in a different womans body, the fetus does not take on the surrogate mothers characteristics but develops according to it's own DNA.
Therefore, I now believe life begins at conception.

Totally agree.... My father always says it began with the twinkle in his eye and the TV on the blink.
