There has been much in the news here in the USA not too long ago about "Flag Desecration". In fact, there was even a bill before congress to pass a law banning burning or otherwise defacing the flag. The bill failed by only one vote as I recall. Now I would like to pose a question primarily to Americans but open to anybody. If an envoy from another planet or galaxy came to earth with the power to lay waste to our entire world, kind of like KLATU from the movie "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and said "In order to save your world you must destroy, by fire, one of these two things." Which would you choose?
And why?
One more proviso, the destruction must be performed, by YOU, on global TV where billions of people will witness the act. This is just to prevent you from saying later "I didn't do it."

Light the constitution and burn the flag with it. Now the rest of the story. Our planet is saved. The flag and constitution will still stand for freedom and democracy--it is more than words on paper or number 3 colored thred and 1000 count PSI material.

Only two options in a poll offers no true choice for opinion. Even the politicians put up more than one candidate.

Perhaps it is because the choice is so obvious???
Or, because there are more threads and posts bashing the US government and it seems to me that most forum members have nothing good to say about the US government?
The Constitution and the flag are symbols and cannot be destroyed in the hearts of those who believe.

The choice may be obvious to you and I was hoping to get votes for both choices to show that people don't all agree on what's worth preserving and what's not. One fellow even suggested burning both.
The flag IS a symbol, the Constitution is NOT. It is a legal document. If a flag is destroyed it can be replaced with another one just as pretty, in fact this country has had many different flags, some with 13 stars some with 48, 49, 50.
Let me stir the pot here.
Why do we pledge allegience to the flag, admittedly nothing more than a symbol? Wouldn't it make more sense to pledge allegience to that which protects us and is the body of all the rights we hold so dear?
even the pledge is symbolic... it really means nothing when people recite it over and over. One reason all the flack over the pledge being taken out of schools never interested me. I pledge allegiance to me...and me only. If I am true to me...I am the best citizen I can be
Well, I want to thank all of those who voted in my little poll and also all who posted a comment. With 32 votes it seems there were 16 votes for each choice. Very surprising to me but the most amazing result is the distribution of votes in fact it boggles my mind.
The men voted 71% to burn the flag. women voted 73% to burn the constitution.
And these results span all ages in both cases. Would anybody care to voice an opinion on why there is such an opposing view between men and women?
I've decided to bump this thread because this is just too damn important an issue to let die and because there are a lot of new members who haven't voted in this poll.
I would also like to hear some more comments supporting your choice especially from any American who would vote to burn the constitution. If you would set a match to the constitution you must have some good reason to destroy all our rights and our freedoms that our sons and daughters have fought and died for for 100's of years.
I assumed the wording meant to ask us which one could we do without and imo the answer is simple, the flag, since the constitution has already been torn to shreds.

Im surprised at the votes to burn the constitution - Im not subject to it of course but I thought it was pretty good - from what little I know it exists to protect your rights, you have managed to keep guns and the rights that go along with them - lots of other countries have been effectively disarmed
I really dont know enough about this to say more.........
This is am obvious no brainer! The flag truly is only a symbol. It is a symbol of those words and rights that are granted to us by the Constitution. It is the rights that are granted to us by the Constitution that make it alright for them to burn the flag. The flag is truly only a symbol and while it is a emotionally charged and deeply personal symbol to most because of the blood that has been shed for old glory. It is that very same blood that was shed to protect those peoples right to speak their mind in whatever way they wish. While I don't beleive the same way as someone that would burn the flag and i think if they hate this country so much they should just move to afganastan or something, if some wack job moron wants to burn a flag have at it. and I will be one of the first people in line to protect his right to do so. That being said if that say wack job moron tries to burn my flag, I am going to exercise some of those other rights that are guaranted by the constitution and my the lord have mercy on their souls.

I picked burn the flag for the simple reason, although I don't support burning it myself, it is a form of expression. It is a way of showing decent of the country, which is one of our main rights as Americans...Freedom of expression.

Its amazing that we get fined if we burn our flag yet the immigrants here not long ago had streets blocked off and had protection from the police so they could burn some middle eastern flag while in a protest!
I agreed with the above. For me, it would be the flag. We have millions of them, so burning just one isn't that big of a deal, and it's only a symbol of our country and what we stand for...and the price we've paid for our Freedom. It's not the memory and history of that. And it's replaceable.
Neither! Period. I wouldn't burn the flag. I wouldn't burn the constitution. There are things you either believe in or you don't. I fought in a war for this country and was willing to give my life. This is no different to me. I would rather die! This is just one man's opinion and choice. Let the earth cease to exist because I wouldn't want to live in a place where my beliefs don't count.
