With all the up coming elections going on both in Australia and overseas I thought this would be a good question to put forward.
So many times we hear the same promises and pledges from politicians in order to buy votes and like private enterprise I think in order to keep them more honest it is time that they be held accountable ie sued for false advertising as that is just what they are doing advertising and usually falsely...
Well no, because as we all know lying is a profession,it is nurtured in institutions such as law schools, call centres, churches and the transport industry. For the truly ambitious liar, the pinnacle of their calling is indeed "politics" the art of lawful lying.
People in prison for dishonesty charges are liars who were crap at it and instead should of taken up window licking.
annie_nsw: Thank you for your input DJ .. why does private enterpise get sued for false advertising ?
Because they usually are selling a product or service, not trying to con a vote out of you. Private enterprise advertising = a tangible object or service Political Vote mongering = just filthy lies.

Parliamentary Immunity ringing a bell?
Only can be held to their promise by voting them out of Office, then try them under the proper Laws for thei Misconduct.Otherwise,if they violate the "Code of Ethics"() ,they have to be censured and punished in Parliament by their Peers, and as we know,No Crow Hacks out The Eye of another Crow!

Annie, I've thought about this question more than a few times, myself, and my gut response was indicated in my answer to the poll, which was "yes". However, as soon as I hit that response, I remembered why that was a bad idea. False advertising would mean endless lawsuits over politicians promising something that they ultimately failed to deliver and the failure could very well be out of their hands.
What I do think they should be able to be sued for, however, is slander and libel. I see nothing wrong with a politician making promises they fully intend to keep even if they end up failing for one reason or another - failure shouldn't be punishable by anything except getting voted out of office. Smear campaigns that would, under any other circumstances, fit the definition of slander or libel, however, are things for which they should be held accountable like anyone else. That might do something about the filthy lies and baseless accusations about political rivals that seem to make up the bulk of political advertising.
