bodleing: You are broke, your children are hungry.
You see a guy get out of a top of the range mercedes. He drops a hundred dollar bill.
What would you do???
Ok, this is one of those situational ethics questions, like if your mother and father were in a sinking boat and you could only save one which would you pick. I always hated that cause I felt guilty that I'd have no problem deciding which.
I'll be honest, if my kids were hungry, they come first. If that makes me a bad person, so sorry.

It does not make you a bad person, it just makes you a truthfull one.
Answering morality questions just by thinking of what we would do if we were caught up in a situation seldom yields acurate results. Because it disregards the human nature's strongest, most prevailant variable: The emotional parameter.
And no one can *think* of what they would *feel* like if their 3 little kids were at home, starving due to some set of unfortunate circumstances.
This reminds me the very old story of the guy that stole a salami to feed his starving child and got sentenced for it. That is not immoral, in the contrary it is a selfless act of sacrifice for your child.

I am begining to not get it, please fellow CSers, do explain how you view morality:
You are completely broke.
Your children are starving.
Do you steal the Salami or do you let them starve?
There are no alternatives here, it is a situational morality question. A philosophical question that has been endlessly been debated through the centuries.

Hm ... you woke up some memory here. I happened to be in this situation back to Russia. I gave it back to him (and my 2 kids were starving) ... we become friends. The ways of life are mysterious.
The way my parents taught me ... Honesty is first. By cheating or lying you will only disgrace yourself. Be proud no matter what. That's what parents told me. And I am grateful to them for those lessons.
There is always tomorrow ... no one have died of hunger these days, yet. (At least on Eurasian continent).
Well. From what I have learned over the years, just because he drives a Mercedes does not mean he's rich, alot of them are only a paycheck from the street just like the rest of us.
I would give it back, I would rob the nearest government office if my kids had to eat, as they took my money without ever cosidering wether I could afford to have them steal from me in the first place.

That is a very good point..... alot of people are up to their eyes in debt maintaining bank loans to keep them in nice cars...
But based on the dilemma in question... who needs what more? a person with a mercedes.. their car.. or a starving child... food... I feel morally justified in putting the starving child first.. but thats just me.... thankfully most of us will never be in this situation.. but if you think about it... how many of us throw away lots of food cause we don't like it our buy useless items (with the money we worked hard for) when their are children in your country and in mine (not to mention third world countries) who don't know where their next meal is coming from.... I know it seems on the face of it bad to do something like this.. but if it is a matter of survival human beings are capable of being stretched to their limits.. now while I will be honest and say I would consider pocketing €100 in order to feed my starving children, by the same token I would first be prepared to scrub toitets for a living or beg on the street if it really came to it.. I am not a mother yet, but I do know a mothers love and motivation to protect is about as powerful as it gets JMHO
