Do you miss your butt? I have smoked 2 packs per day since I was 16.. so that makes it 30 years of smoking. For the past month I have cut back to One pack per day and less, have all of the Items in place to quit completely.. So When I go to bed tonight.. Thats it. Patchs ready.
How many here smoke and who have quit? How many times have/ did you try quiting before you finally got there? What made you finally kick it?

Good luck Ras.
I finally gave it up last Thursday. Quit because I was sick of the smell and it was really beginning to affect my everyday life and health. Seemed everything was centered around a smoke.
I'm using Zyban, sugar free gum and have increased my gym time. Helps a little but God knows I want a cigarette right now.
I've half heartedly tried several times in the past but I'm taking this one much more seriously. I am determined to stay away from the damn things.

Good luck to you also! hope you can stick it out!! they say it gets easier after 2 weeks.
I gave up smoking 6 months ago..this is the 7th attempt and the winning one..i read the Allen Carr book which made loads of sense..the cough that could wake me out of a deep sleep has gone...my flat and me smell gorgeous now...i dont think about ciggies much now..R.
rasgumby: Will be one more thing I have to put on my list when looking for a partner-- "non-smoker"
God that would taste nasty!!!! Would be like kissing an ashtray. I can already smell smoke on others
Yes I sometimes meet someone quite nice but alas a smoker and I find it a hinderance to date someone that does...and yes it tastes quite aweful and people are often unaware of how strong the smell is on their clothing and hair...When I am at work as a doctor, I ask my patients do you smoke? They often say no and I can smell it a mile away.
When at a restaurant or bar they keep having to disappear outside for a puff...just think, you will no longer have to brave the weather to feed your lung addiction and food will start to taste sweeter and your smell senses will become stronger.

I quit drinking 20 years ago.. cant stand to be around drinkers, Will be the same with smokers, If they come here, they will have to go outside away from any windows, no more smoking in my car and so on. Already have a no smoking sign on the door. But I will have to clean the walls really soon to get the smell out of the house.

Just a little info from the smoking cessation class I attended.
*20 Minutes after you quit: * Blood Pressure drops to a level close to that before the last cigarette * Temperature of hands and feet increases to normal
*8 Hours after you quit: *Carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal
*24 Hours after you quit: *Risk of heart attack decreases
*2 Weeks-3 Months after you quit: *Circulation improves *Lung function increases up to 30%
*1-9 Months after you quit: *Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, shortness of breath decrease *Cilia regain normal function in lungs, increasing ability to handle mucus, clean lungs and reduce infection
*1 Year after you quit: *Excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker’s
*5 Years after you quit: *Stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker’s
*10 Years after you quit: *Lung cancer death rate about half that of a continuing smoker *Risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decreases
15 Years after you quit: *Risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmoker’s
I can say the first 2 are right. We'll see about the rest.
I have never smoked but my father smoked 40 a day which made me very anti as a child. I wish all who make the effort to kick this awful habit the very best of luck.

Quit for the first and only time on Dec 31 1998.
Had an acupuncture session in the July, browsed the Amercan Lung association's book on quitting once a week until December nd then sropped. I disliked smoking while walking on the street and the proliferation of no smokimg areas made my 5 pack a day habit really inconvenient.
I smoked for 11 years and then quit cold turkey for 14 years... then I bought a bar and have been smoking for an additional 11 years... I recently changed to rollup cigarettes which has cut my smoking in half, and now smoke pure tobacco without all the horrible chemical additives and feel much better for it. In fact, if a get lazy and bum a normal cigarette from someone it actually makes me nauseous.
I'm not ready to quit just yet and it's ridiculous to even try if it's not something you really want, but I think probably within the next year I'll call it quits.
I quit a few times, and started back. I am not right now, but who knows if I will start again, its an off and on thing for me, depends on the mood I am in! Hopefully I wont any more, but I wouldnt say never!!
Minimum of a pack a day for 30+ years. I quiet last year for about 8 months. Ran into some stress and picked it up again, gradually. Ive been playing with quitting again since then. Ive was on "the Patch" for a long time "cutting back" Finally finished what I had and didnt buy anymore. Ive been without butts or patches for almost 2 months now. I could sit down and smoke a cartoon with no problem. I just dont buy them and dont go around people who do smoke. Im done with them. I quit because of my ducks. They mad me. Oddly enough I had not had a cigarett for over a month before they even noticed...hehe... KEEP AT IT, IT DOES GET BETTER!!!!

wow, Gumby, what a coincidence!
It's my 2nd day quitting smoking too! I guess we'll keep each other's spirit up I have been thinking about it for some time and i decided upon it yesterday.
I have been smoking a steady pack or two of Marlboro /day for about 14 years now, with very small breaks - i quit twice for a couple of months. I know it wont be easy for either of us pal, but we'll do it

hey Casie
If you are on and off the damn thing, that means you do not yet have a strong addiction like i do. So my best advice: Stay as far away from it as you can, before it grows on you too much

DR.RAS, PLEASE NOTE THAT WHEN THE PATCH SAYS DON'T SMOKE AND DO THE PATCH IT MEANS EXACTLY THAT, SEEN MANY PEOPLE GO TO EMERGENCY BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD SMOKE AND DO THE PATCH, IT CAUSES HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES AND DEATH PLEASE READ A FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, GUY I KNEW ALMOST DIED, HE WISHED HE HAD AFTER HIS TWO DEATH TRIPS BECAUSE OF SMOKING AND THE PATCH. Just a gentle reminder ok?
