i personally hate it and find it hard seeing everyone all loved up and stuff

I really don´t mind being single because I still spend Xmas with my adult son and daughter and the rest of my family even though we live in different countries.
This year though my daughter is spending Christmas with my son who is working in Shanghai, and I can´t get enough time off to join them. My mum and partner are also not able to visit me here in Spain and flights for me to the UK to be with them and my brothers and sisters are now fully booked up or outrageously expensive, so unless I take up some offers from friends I´ll be alone for the first time ever.

I´ll be fine, but somehow I think I´d rather be alone than with friends. I know I´ll have to make up some damn good excuses for them though!

Christmas is family time really.. and it is all about the young ones especially. I have had to spend a few Christmasses alone and you are right it is a bit of a downer to see everyone all "loved up" as you aptly put it but sharing it with my family more than compensated in a way. The worse was working abroad in a country where Christmas is simply not marked and being alone plus away from my family.. I shiverrrrrrrrrrr!!! My tip would be to go ahead and be the "Christmas planner" for your immediate circle of family and friends and make it one to remember :)

thanks but not as tough as the first year alone plus my best friend is due a baby on christmas day so might end up helping with the dinner

I quiet like it, no stress about whos going where, what gifts to get etc etc plus the fact that I still love going home to my parents to be mothered by mammy, have a sneaky few beers with my dad in a house full of food/gifts/laughgter & love

Strangely, its Stephens Day (Boxing Day)that gets to me. Since I split from my ex we have the tradition that my daughter spends xmas day with me and Stephens day with her Dad and his extended family. I cook dinner on xmas day, and the extended family visit. Then on stephens day, she goes to spend the day with her dad and his extended family and I just find that day very quiet and think, if I had someone special it would be a perfect day just to spend together.
