I have good friendships with two ex's in particular...sucked at the relationship, but wonderful to call them my friends. I try to leave a relationship by growing as a person and harboring no animosity towards anyone...life's too short to be angry and carrying it with you isn't healthy.

ahhhhhhhhhh thats so cute coming from a fella especially my ex was a monster to me but i spent 10 yrs of my life with him and i wud never wish 1 bad thing on him r like te c anything bad happen him even tho he was bad to me didnt make me nt love him anymore it jus made me sad 
i tryd to tell him when we finished that i wud still like to b here for him if he ever needed me in anyway as a friend r to talk r anything cos i didnt jus wanna cut him outta my life after spending 10 years with him i wud rather have him as a friend than nothing at all 
but he was to bitter an angry he wanted me r nothing at all and said a lot of hurtful thngs jus to hurt me even more cos he cudnt have his way 
and if anything happend him i wud still b devastated maybe i new wat love was and maybe he didnt i suppose

It's a good question. I do miss some things about my most recent ex - in fact, there are things I love about all the guys I've ever dated. There's a big difference though between fond memories and wanting to have those people back in your life.
Finally it's a mathematical equation for me. Are you happier or more miserable because they're in your life? I think we end relationships when we know that those people make us more unhappy than they do happy. How unhappy you have to be before you end it is dependent upon your emotional pain threshold. JMO.
