Augments seem to be a way of life for some people, so if any of the above strike a chord and your brave enough to admit to any of them.

What do you like arguing about, anything in particular?

What actually makes you stop arguing?

When do you just give up and try to see things from another's perspective, or do you just give up and think their not worth the effort, or take the moral high ground?

Hopefully this won't degenerate into an arguement thread itself, but it might well be a good place to explain if you need the place to do it somewhere to say why you exploded on the forums, o put your foot in your mouth and didn't back down for some reason.

I've tried to sling a few explanations or reasons above, but if you can think of another please list them.

Hopefully we will see an honest reflection of how people see the subject, which is seen in here on a daily basis.

Remember, this is a poll and debate!! Not an opportunity to sling mud at anyone!!!

I love to debate. It is good exercise for the brain. Only works though if the people debating are reasonable and respectful. I'd have to admit I slip sometimes, but mostly try very hard to be reasonable and respectful.

there is most definitely a difference between ignorant arguing and good clean arguement. Many resort to arguing/slamming/insulting because they have limited knowledge on the topic at hand and quickly run out of ammo, or they just refuse to see facts when they are presented to them. (even if it's in a nice way) But those people expose themselves as being a little dim when they post the way they do.

One of my favorite quotes is this....

"Don't raise your voice......Raise your arguement."

Yes, definitely. I think some people get upset when people are discussing different opinions, debating on an intellectual level, because they think it is arguing. What's important for real debate is not to take anything personally. After all, it is only ideas. professor doh

I enjoy a good debate....not arguement...However I will defend myself against those who like to stir up trouble sometimes....other times they just bore me because it's on a day by day or minute by minute basis...the one thing I don't do is nasty....and if a debate turns to name calling etc...then I'm outta there because you can't debate with someone who is only mature enough to call others names!!!!!!!!!!

Why do you think people resort to these tactics? Do you think they don't want to being seen as being wrong, or wont accept others ideas or maybe even they might see it as they have to be right at all costs?

I think they just don't understand how to debate, how to discuss something without mudslinging, how to listen, how to treat others' opinions with respect, etc......frustrated

Some people believe they are right no matter what information is put before them...they are the ones that never learn anything..people oppose things they are ignorant to...
Blinkers...
I once met a man when I started working in a foreign third world country who had been there for twelve years..every day he whined about the people, the language barrier, culture etc etc...
I was there for four months and knew more in the ways of the people and helped them through taking my blinkers off...he drew a blank with them...wonder why?

I have to say i don't forget arguments of this nature, and i go quiet if its personal and as a rule of thumb don't even bother to interact after that.

I'm the worst person on the planet to want to argue with for fun, as i walk off and go mute.As girlfriends in the past found out, and they found it very frustrating! Some even hit me instead, then that didn't work as well and when they displayed that trait you can imagine my thoughtslaugh

Debates are grate, arguments i wont even do.

I honestly think they don't have enough information to keep up with the debate and feel threatened by those who do. And rather than ask for more information or admit that they may be wrong, they try to shield themselves by pouncing on the real debaters hoping that they will lose track of the thread and thus end the arguement.

It doesn't work though. Not on me anyway.

I didn't pick an option Rob as i will argue only if its necessary to get my point of view a cross. Also i do try an listen the other person opinion though if i am honest i want my voice heard. However after sometimes hearing another's opinion i have changed of moderated my opinion.

I will stop debating/arguing if we seem to be going round in circles and no new point of view are being put forward. Also if it gets to heated and the other person is not listening to anyone.

I once was an employee representative and had to speak on others behalf on some points of view i didn't agree with. So i think i quite balanced in a debate.

Discussions without arguments are so much more difficult in relationships...there is so much emotional attachment involved and not taking things personally is difficult...when in love it can appear as rejection.

Yes, of course.... on CS, most certainly. I have previously posted with what could be consider a fairly "pragmatic" response and its been viewed and argued as "contention". Huhh???!! confused But then I have posted with humour and received similar accusations...!!
doh Beggars belief sometimes...!! Often it just serves one's purpose to make something negative (rather than positive) out of a perfectly civilised debate..... bad day at the office perhaps??

You only have to look at the Obama thread to see the same circular arguemnts and people not dealing with the issues.

Talk about flogging a dead horse, i don't even go in there now, i can almost predict what 2 people will always say, so i gave up!

Maybe a good slap with a herring would make these people stop for a second and just think?

Sometimes the humour doesnt travel well does it as non english people might not understand a word were on about!

Also i love the soundbite crowd, who if they don't like your standpoint call you either "negative" or a "trouble maker".

This is also another lazy standpoint.

Has anyone had a pop at you on the forums and you have no idea where their thinking pattern even came from?

Or what about those who make judgements about your personal circumstances, when they don't even know you?

Does any of this make sense? Are these people just divisive or do they think their clever ?

Yes, of course.... you know full well that that happens. But again.... "Stones" and "Sponges", Robbie.... if there is flexibility and one is receptive to other viewpoints, it is worth debating. But, frankly, there are those who cannot/will not take on board looking at things from another angle and be willing to learn.... I simply give up because its not worth trying to validate such rigidity.

Only this morning, I have trudged around the Forums a bit and find a post from someone who quite clearly has expressed views completely in contradiction to what previous behaviour has projected..... I was wondering if it should be on the "Hypocrisy" thread...??!!
