with the death of Julius Ceasar that was the beginning of the end of the Roman empire... although it lasted for a good many years after I believe things would have been diferent if he had been around for another 20 years or so

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was instrumental in the onset of WWI. Had the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald not happened and, subsequently, Jack Ruby, there may have been a different light cast on the real truth about the assassination of JFK....... just examples.

All of them are historically important and have consequently steered politics and the modern world in the direction its gone. Negate any one of them and a natural progression would have taken a different tack, without doubt.

I shall ponder this and get back to you? The only one at the moment that springs to mind is Louis XV, King of France from 1715 to 177?? (sorry, forget), which contributed to the downfall of royal rule and, in turn, led to the Revolution. France would not be the republic it is today.....

Interesting thought, 'Portlea'. Thank you. Gandhi was a lawyer as well as a politician. Had he been killed by an assassin he'd have become a martyr, speeding his cause, but likely igniting even more violence. And this was something he had cleverly avoided.

There are similarities to Jesus of Nazareth, the subject of another thread in the forums.

And what of TE Lawrence?

If ever the genuine philosophies and politics of Gandhi, Lawrence, Jesus were adopted politically by the Palestinians they'd probably win their struggle.

Would the Sub Continent have been different today had Gandhi been assassinated..? Yes. History would have been shadowed.

Now I must go consider my options with your poll and vote. After all, voting is compusory here Downunder. But it is historically. nationally and democratically confidential. An Australian invention.

Hence my hesitation.

???

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, shot at point-blank range by Nathuram Godse, an activist of the Hindu nationalist Hindu Mahasabha. Since 1934, there had been five unsuccessful attempts to kill Gandhi.(wikipedia)

K... I chose Livinenko because he is germaine to our era, the world today.

Had he survived the polonium in London, had he disclosed the Italian Job dirty discussions, Putin dirty dealings, we'd perhaps see a reversal of the trend in Russia today back towards despotic Stalinism, but this time coupled with the worst of Western corporate gangster practice.

More disclosures, moral and political outrage expressed, as more journalists have been assassinated in the past two years throughout Russia than anywhere else in the world, and more dissidents
are disappearing weekly.

I'm not mouthing opinion and rhetoric. There's growing consensus against Aleksandr Putin's corrupt Moscow Kremlin.

It's not just me. Many others too, according to usually reliable human rights and social justice, vested interest groups such as Amnesty, the International Federation de Journalistes, Reporters Sans Frontiers, the Sydney Social Justice Group, law reformer Frank Brennan. Peter Singer (Stanford, Melbourne0

And so, I've put Livinenko head of the list because his history, the effects of his assassination, the reasons, causes, are still being written.
