Okay, I changed my mind and decided to take part in after all
First off I spotted a budgie and cockatiel ducking and diving, doing loop da loops and backward somersaults and this was before I even set foot in my back-yard.
This spectacular bird air-show took place in my living room
When I finally set foot outside... I saw 3 barn owls, 6 racing pigeons, 2 sparrows. But! The grand finale was 3 flying pigs

Juneau: The red bags, and especially the net bags that hold fat balls, are pretty dangerous to birds. They can get their feet caught in them...and then
Better to buy a proper bird feeder really
Hi Juneau,
I make my own fat balls which I put in a feeder but with no netting on them. It's so easy for their tiny feet to get caught up.
They appear to prefer mine to the shop ones ,must like my cooking.
I am in the process of making a table for them to feed from as the seed from the containers is making a mess of the lawn The birds are like children and chuck out what they don't want
I have also notice that the field mice are visiting and I also don't want to encourage rats.
I'm looking in the Charity shops for an edged tray that I can raise up and use as a feeder for the ground feeders to stop the mess.
Going to put up some nesting boxes too.I am so enjoying the garden even in Winter.
Perhaps you could put your "recipe" for the fat balls onto the Wildlife Forum site.
I too have recently made my own fat cake for the birds and they like it much better than the commerically bought ones (they are Chapelfield ones too, which are supposed to be a good company!). As to the "raw" fat cake...well, they go absolutely nuts (pardon the pun! ) for that! Every single species loves it!! I will share the basic recipe and some photos on the Wildlife Forum.
You can buy ground feeders really cheaply in various shops. I got a bit carried away and I have ended up with three, but they are handy, esp when it's snowy. You can sit them ontop of the snow and the birdseed, sultanas etc don't fall through and get lost.
