I think you have the right idea. Talking to him first would be best. That way you're not really betraying anyone. Then if he decides to keep doing what he's doing, tell her. No girl should have to go through that nonsense. And if he gets mad...oh well. He's the one that made this choice. You're a good friend to her either way, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise :)
