Well that looks like three trees planted together, like their hugging to keep warm, and judging from the mound around the base of the tree(s?), I'd say its had compost laid around it, to keep the roots warm. Plus it was proberly well cared for when it was young and grew into a strong healthy fig tree that can withstand your coldish weather you have, like it adapted to its surroundings, evolved so to speak...
