You're finding just how different people can be from different parts of the country and the world. I am probably closer in personality and background to you than just about anybody on this site. My sister for years lived around 21st Ave in Astoria by the Con Ed plant and I lived for years in the Queensbridge projects in LIC, Vernon Blvd & 41st Ave. Yep, the world is full of surprises.

I lived in KY for a couple of years, A place called Independence. I went over to IN a few times, it was like travelling back in time about 50 years. Not my cup of tea. I also spent 2 weeks working the Indy 500. OH was very similar to IN & KY. That whole part of the country is a little too Mom & Apple pie for my taste. Been to CA many times, in fact it would be easier for me to list the states I've never been to.

Where is this house you're thinking of buying, SA? In the USA you can hire a contractor to inspect the house from the foundation to the roof. The bank will require that before they will commit to a loan. They will also require a survey. By the way, you're a little late having 4 kids the oldest being 17 to be thinking about buying a house. Instaed of making babies you should have been concentrating on getting that house.
@myrrwna: Your description of flying for the first time was perfect. I couldn't have said it better. It's amazing isn't it? I mean there's no way that big thing could ever get off the ground especially filled with people. And how can something that big ever go that fast and get so high up in the sky and there's nothing holding it up but air.

Your French teacher is wrong! People in the west don't hate Hungarians, they hate French people LOL. I'm half Hungarian, my mother was born in Budapest. The Hungarian language is one of the most beautiful languages on earth and nothing can compare to Hungarian cooking. I grew up on sekely goulash, horca, light & dark, palachinta in fact I make it myself. I have a jar of Lekvar in my cabinet right now. Sorry about the spelling I wish I could get some Horca right now.
Sorry to hear that Jan. I heard of a cure years ago but never really tried it. The idea is to soak in a really hot bath to get your blood temperature high enough to kill the flu germs. But again while it sounds logical it may just be BS. I found a site for curing the flu which might help.
I'm sorry to hear your budding relationship came to such an abrupt end. Judging by the circumstances you outlined, it appears to me that your beau has a lack of confidence in himself and is also a little prone to jealousy. His trust in you was broken by a simple mis-understanding which could have been avoided (or at least postponed) by better communication. His lack of confidence would have come to the surface later on, when, and if, your relationship advanced to a higher level.
When jealousy and distrust enter a relationship, it's just a matter of time before the relationship falls apart.

Choices Jan. He made his and you made yours. I seriously doubt he turned to alcohol because you & he broke up. Maybe his failed marriage sent him down the tube. We all suffer from loss and heartache. Some people have the character to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and go forward. Some people can't and they self destruct. Thanks for all the info Life is a learning experience. Although KY is known for horses VA is also a big horse state. I use to live about 5 miles from Commonwealth park up in Culpeper VA where Steve Reeves broke his neck. Now I live about the same distance from the farm where Secretariate lived.
