The elderly man had been a German soldier & been captured by Americans on his 19th birthday, which he regarded as the Luckiest day of his life. Shortly after, his unit was transfered to the Eastern Front where it was annihilated to a man.
He'd spent the war as a POW near the heavily German town of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where he did farm work & occasionally joined local families for Sunday dinner.
He had fond memories of the time, contacted the U.S. Gov't about returning for a visit some 50 years later, and the Army officers were sent along to assist him in finding old locations.
