Friendship is a purely selfish act. The purpose is to seek reassurance and company as the alternative would be difficult for some people to tolerate. Only people with mental strength can survive without relying on others for praise and comforting and security. Reciprocation of the attention is the reward and a feeling of belonging to a group.
