To understand our primate (monkey) origins is to be an Athiest. To not rank ourselves above the other animals, is to be an atheist. To not expect anything, after this life, is to be an atheist. To realize that the Sun will cook us if we continue down this path is to be an atheist. To realize that No god will turn down the Sun (because no god exists) is to be an atheist. To see that we are just another biological entity is to be an atheist. To realize that we are just another biological plague species, and are grossly overpopulating a dying planet (with diminishing finite resources), is to be an atheist. That is about my best definition.....
Another theory is that Our Universe may well be infinite. Cosmologists are beginning to suspect that our universe may be much much more vast, than anyone has contemplated.
To get you head around the idea of a multiverse, within various "infinite spaces", it is necessary to know of Gorg Cantor's "orders of infinity" Simply put: some infinities are Bigger than others
Consider the number:
10^1000
(Ten to the power of 1000)
Effectively this number is "infinite" in the sense that humans understand it. But what about:
10^1000000
Now we have a much larger number, (a bigger infinity)
What about:
(10^1000000)^1000
This is again, a much larger infinity. And so on, and so forth (well you get the idea)...
There are various models. A "quilted" multiverse has connected universes, similar to a (space-time) patchwork quilt (hence the name). Other models suggest universes separated by "branes" (which is to say, effectively infinite distances)..in this case, imagine a child blowing soap bubbles (with each of these "bubbles" being a universe). Still, there is no need for a "creator" (as such), as initial boundary conditions dictate an infinity of eternally inflating universes, corresponding to an endless fractal pattern, in a Truly Infinite Void...
Galaxies are contained within the universe, and it may well be that (our) universe is contained within an infinite Multiverse. Basically, if there is a Universal Quantum Wave Function, that does Not collapse into one possibility (being our universe); then that same wave function contains (equally), ALL possibilities in the information inherent within it; hence; for this reason, a Multiverse is entirely possible...
It is possible, that ours is the only universe, (although, I , personally don't think so). IF our universe is the only one; then it all started with the Big Bang. Accordingly, galaxies, formed at different times (with the oldest being at the 'edge' of (our) observable universe).
If, on the other hand, there are a multiplicity of universes, then the universes (themselves) formed at different times; and each may have different laws of physics (see quantum theory "Many worlds Interpretation")..I tend to think that we are living in a multiplicity of universes (The Multiverse); but others disagree....
We don't know that it's possible?....more correctly, we don't know how it is possible, (being the rather limited ape descendants, that we are)...But there is hope...with further scientific advances, we may come to know more....

I'm doughfinitely not reading any more of this stuff!
