US customs and border protection keep a record of all encounters. On average it's approximately 5600 per day. The 18,000 a day guesstimate doesn't seem that far-fetched if you figure for every one "caught" two sneak in unnoticed.

Think about this. How effective would the Taliban have been against U S forces in Afghanistan without assault rifles and small arms? By military standards, not even close to being an organized unit, and just look at what they accomplished.

I remember a similar story told here, but it involved an avocado in a market with a very rude shopper. Actually it didn't really have any similarities, I just remember it after reading this blog for some reason.
