RE: Book Banning in America

@op keep in mind that A Clockworld Orange was rated R19 for many years here in Australia - so I had to wait until my son's 19th birthday to go and see it there in George St. R19??? I recall too buying Lady Chatterley's Lover in a brown paper bag in NZ so many years ago too.

RE: You read it here first.

A popular image according to tineye - wolfman or dracula?

RE: Australia's Formidable Wildlife

I have only ever
Been bitten by dogs and monkeys
None other deems me worthy of a bite
Stung of course by blue bottles
That is every Sydneyites plight
A close call or two
With a funnelweb
lodged in a shoe
An unwritten law which is sound
you should always give shoes left outside
A knock or two on the ground

RE: You read it here first.

@ray but perhaps she put a hex on the red tsunami fourcheeses was touting?

RE: You read it here first.

@ray most of it has already! You're urging her to a futile spell.

RE: Very good night for the Republicans so far

@OP The Steal? There we go again! No it is not 'a steal' but it is voting pattern and counting regulations. Voting pattern does vary across party and independent lines, it is a fact observable with consistency. Which booths are counted early, which late. Mail vote, early vote. Your Republicans discourage mail voting claiming fraud. Then when mail votes from democrats eliminate a margin you like to claim 'steal'.

Same happens here, the distant booths arrive late, and they have different demography. Mail votes here are not always counted on the night, our elections happen on Saturdays.
Add to that the preferential voting system where eliminated candidates have their vote reassigned to their second or third choice... possibly 2-3 days later. At least the preferential voting, as in Alaska, means no need for run-off election.

RE: Australia's Formidable Wildlife

@OP the butcher birds do the September magpie swoop too. They're also known as shrikes in the Americas, and impale victims on sticks spikes broken branches. Nowhere near as large as the magpies, but you'll surely duck your helmeted head when you ride under a nest.

RE: You read it here first.

not quite sure which is more appropriate, but one of two cliches concerning chickens comes to mind. Something about roost or about counting - take your pick and gloat as you may.

RE: Very good night for the Republicans so far

In terms of the usual mid-term outcome trends this appears to be a significant defeat, or at least a significant disappoint. GOP has nothing whatsoever to crow about, do they? Not much doubt about the house, but the senate hangs on a knife edge, probably to be determined in a runoff.

Red wave? Not exactly is it? Still expected outcome is both houses red - ironic meaning to Reds under the bed, don't you think? If you ask me this current era of Reds under the bed is far scarier than the McCarthy era.

RE: Road Trip!

Oh yes, Jackie Brown!

RE: Road Trip!

It's nothing great - of his I only liked only Pulp Fiction and one other, can't remember what it was

RE: You read it here first.

@bcj good - you think? and be nice? Oh no, that's not going to happen!

RE: You read it here first.

Oh goodie goodie, resurrection of the loudmouth! Allow me, always didactic and pedantic as you know, to instruct you that your 'puffter' is written as either pooftah or poofter - at least in Australian/NZ/British English. Perhaps in Germangledlish it is as you chose.

RE: Road Trip!

Photos rather make me think of Tarentino's Kill Bill 2

RE: Twits on Twitter...

@ab this from the geezer whose most cogent reasoning is expressed in dots dashes and dollars! Twit! (just to stay on topic)

RE: Twits on Twitter...

@loh you actually read them? That turgid tripe?

RE: One more for the road.....

@hpy
The women in my life have all been loud, opinionated and assertive - unshutuppable one and all. But then I do seek them out that way!

RE: Twits on Twitter...

@merl to attribute the polarised state of USA to twitter and a cohort of malevolents connected to Yevgeny Prigozhin just holds no water. The widening division goes back at least 50 years according to generally accepted opinion. This thread is indeed about twitter but your claims are simply not creditable. Here is an article (not about twitter but connected to your remark) which I find interesting:

I would suggest that the likes of Trump have widened the gap, and resulted from the widening gap, far more

RE: Twits on Twitter...

@merlot sits easy with me!

RE: Twits on Twitter...

@merlot oh save me save me! Not another potsy conspirationista please! No I know nothing of this and am highly inclined to dismiss contemptuously.

RE: Twits on Twitter...

@merlot the American divide goes way way back, but the recent recurrence goes back about 30 years.

RE: Meeting and communication

The ones (the many) who want to connect up front via email get short shrift. One case from here where we actually connected on zoom fell through, so shrug. I have never spoken with anyone here.
In other sites I have indeed made connection first online with yahoo msn skype qq wechat and in a few cases met face to face. However I've never done it by phone - the online chats provide better security.

RE: Is it true China will drop anchors around Australia and take over mining operations there soon?

But then Guam is an inviting stepping stone, perhaps.

RE: Video chatting with someone from a dating site

Well just ask yourself, what would have been your reaction with the boot on the other foot? Not exactly boot of course but ... I've conducted online lessons for over 10 years and never met anyone in any state of undress. I question your social awareness.

RE: About the hearing...

Watching Planet America (Australian TV program on current affairs in America) they suggest the special committee hearings are unlikely to have significant effect (both Dem and Rep minds having been made up long ago) but they do record the history of events reliably. They speak of Georgia, Iowa, Nevada as important in the upcoming mid-terms. You'd bet the balance of power is going to shift to the Reps. Another crippled President, same as the Obama years.

RE: Stop typing ect.

@Herr Konrad Latin has been spoken used and taught for way over 2000 years. Its pronunciation is known. It was the common language of science until - not so long ago. Both Newton and Leibnitz wrote it. I studied it for 3 years, in particular Caesar's 'The Gallic Wars' - Commentarii de Bello Gallico.

RE: What Makes Jesus Unique? No one else made the claims that He did, He is alive...............

Things are improving here in Australia - in the last 10 years, maybe 20, no Scientologists Brethren Mormons have come knocking - they always got short shrift anyway - not interested, go away, please do not come again. Watchtower is no longer peddled at the local station, and at the nearby major junction the busker at the bottom of the stairs no longer sings the praises of god.
The white shirted suited young male couples who used to wander the street, speaking Chinese quite well no longer accost people. Yippee!
My neighbours are Muslim, Catholic, Buddhist Unknown - I never ask and I never intrude.
It pleases me to observe the retreat of religion in Australia.

The @op uses the word 'hatred' in referring to me - what utter nonsense! This is a blog and invites response - you've got mine! 20,000 comments - now tell me, do you or do you not observe obsession there? How many are the @op herself ... I won't flagellate by counting them, but I am guessing the windbag constitutes at least 90%

RE: Stop typing ect.

In Latin if I remember correctly the 'c' is hard, like et keteruh. How about German USW instead, und so weiter... or the American blah blah blah, and so on? Interesting how these anachronistic Latin abbreviations survive - ie, eg, nb, qed - any others? Oh yes, et al, cf. et ainsi de suite doesn't quite roll off the tongue, does it, but I suspect the French use etc.
Getting more up my nose are the online uses of there/their/they're your/you're and lose/loose loser/looser
