That sort of paranoia, presuming people to be guilty until proven innocent turns the whole idea of justice upside down.

If people accept that, then they will accept all sorts of horrors.

Oops, the cop shot an innocent deaf man who didn't hear the command to raise his hands. Oh well, that's understandable. Self defense.

There is no justification for body scans or frisking. People have a right to travel without such invasions of their privacy.

The same paranoid mentality will soon allow random street searches and surprise warrantless house raids.

This has been the coolest summer in the 22 years I've lived in France. I still had my heat on until mid June. Still slept with a quilt until mid July. There were a couple of weeks of hot weather then, but it's been relatively cool for a couple of weeks now. I have to close the windows at night because it's too cool otherwise.

This is a fairly typical solution in Japan.

In essence there is no death penalty now.

But to leave the door open for unforeseen circumstances in the future, and also to avoid any implication that those who earlier performed executions were wrong to do so, they leave the laws in place but simply don't enforce them.
