The European Commission must urgently reconsider whether Israel is complying with its human rights obligations in Gaza under the EU/Israel Association Agreement, an economic pact that forms the basis of relations between Brussels and West Jerusalem, the leaders of Ireland and Spain told EC President Ursula von der Leyen and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in a letter on Wednesday.

“We are deeply concerned at the deteriorating situation in Israel and in Gaza, especially the impact the ongoing conflict is having on innocent Palestinians, especially children and women,” Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote.

On Monday, South Africa filed an urgent request with the International Court of Justice seeking a determination of whether Israel’s planned Rafah offensive would constitute a “further imminent breach of the rights of Palestinians in Gaza.” Nearly a million Palestinians evacuated from other parts of the territory are sheltering in the city, and there is nowhere left for them to flee within its borders, as UN and international human rights advocates have warned.

Subianto, 72, of the Advanced Indonesia Coalition is the frontrunner in the contest, with polls projecting he will win a majority.

He currently serves as defence minister after losing to Widodo in the 2014 and 2019 elections.

Schooled internationally, the defence chief is a retired military general who was fired in 1998 for allegedly ordering the kidnapping of tens of pro-democracy activists in unrest following the fall of dictator Suharto.

Together with President Widodo's 36-year-old son Gibran Rakabuming Raka as his vice presidential candidate, Subianto has been outspoken about carrying on the incumbent leader's policies.

Subianto has pledged to eradicate childhood stunting due to malnutrition by offering free lunch to students, one of his most popular campaign programmes. While the prevalence of stunting has been falling, it remained at 21.6 percent in 2022.

The defence chief has also committed to maintaining a nickel ore export ban imposed by Widodo to increase national income from the mining sector and turn Indonesia into a developed nation.

Indonesia's Prabowo Subianto claims presidential election victory in first round
JAKARTA: Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto claimed victory in the first round of the archipelago's presidential election Wednesday after preliminary results indicated he was on course to be elected leader of Southeast Asia's biggest economy.
Official results are not due until next month but government-approved pollsters who collected a sample of votes at polling stations for previously reliable "quick counts" put Subianto on more than 55 percent, with most of the vote sample counted.

"All counts, all pollsters... showed figures that Prabowo-Gibran won in one round. This victory should be a victory for all Indonesians," he told a crowd at an arena in central Jakarta, referring also to his running mate.

The preliminary results put him on track for a majority over his rivals Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo to avoid a second-round runoff vote, which would have taken place in June.

Allies of ex-premier Imran Khan secure biggest share of seats in Pakistan's final election tally
Allies of former Pakistani premier Imran Khan won more seats in national elections than the political parties who ousted him from power nearly two years ago.

The final tally showed that independent candidates secured 101 out of 266 seats in the National Assembly, or lower house of parliament.

The Pakistan Muslim League-N party, or PML-N, led by three-time premier and ex-felon Nawaz Sharif, secured the second biggest number of seats at 75.

The Pakistan People’s Party, or PPP, led by Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, came in third with 54 seats. One result has been withheld and another vote was postponed because of a candidate’s death. The campaign to kick Khan out of office in 2022 was led by the PML-N and the PPP.

No party has won a majority to form a government, so Pakistan will have a coalition. The new parliament chooses the country's next prime minister.

Army chief congratulates Pakistan on 'successful conduct' of elections
The United States, UK and EU expressed concern over Pakistan's electoral process and urged a probe into reported irregularities.

Pakistan's army chief congratulated the country on Saturday for the "successful conduct" of its national elections, saying the nation needed "stable hands" to move on from the politics of "anarchy and polarisation".

The nuclear-armed South Asian nation voted on Thursday in a general election that remains undecided, as it struggles to recover from an economic crisis and battles militant violence in a deeply polarised political environment.

Two former prime ministers, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, both declared victory on Friday.

Pakistan Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir "wishes that these elections bring in political and economic stability and prove to be the harbinger of peace and prosperity for our beloved Pakistan," according to a statement released by the media wing of the military.

The United States, Britain and the European Union on Friday each expressed concerns about Pakistan's electoral process, urging a probe into reported irregularities.

Land Title Deeds, yep you are living in a Commonwealth Country that up until recent times passage of legal appeals lay to the UK House of Lords.

NZ is a country that sent its sons to defend King and Country (UK) in 1939, (including my father and all his brothers) not something other.
NZ was also an original State of NSW Australia. New Zealand whether republicans in aussie-land like it or not e.g. John Howard hated that he loved to taste of American crap, even though he was an Anglican.
I suppose you know that Helen Clark completed her studied in China and Jacinda Ardern was one of Helen Clark's advisers, NZ was isted as an original state at the time formation of the original Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia Act, 1900.
Jacinda Ardern, who earned international acclaim for her dishonest stupid leadership as New Zealand's prime minister, has been appointed to dual fellowships at Harvard Kennedy School—as 2023 Angelopoulos Global Public Leaders Fellow and as a Hauser Leader in the School's Center for Public Leadership.

Still you only get to play with the first few inches of what you may call your land title below that (whatever that depth is) below that depth belongs to the Crown e.g head the church of England King Charles III and of course Queen Camilla, take a look around Butcher !!

it is also asubject matter I think you will find even China has expressed respect for.
China did rush to the aid of many African nations (example) the Congo, even deployed troops there and in some cases loaned to much money crippling the nations, however China realizes (example) that was not its intention, nor was its intention to impose communism upon other countries.
For example the Russian Federation is a Democracy it is government by its Constitution (ratified) 12th December 1993.

One Belt and Road Initiative growing stronger

I think British Commonwealth is not the same as colonization
NZ is member of Commonwealth, although NZ doesn't have a written constitution, instead a Bill of Rights its head of state is King Charles 111. If you look NZ has a Governor General, The governor-general of New Zealand is the representative of the monarch of New Zealand, currently King Charles III. As the King is concurrently the monarch of 14 other Commonwealth realms and lives in the United Kingdom he, on the advice of his New Zealand prime minister, appoints a governor-general to carry out his constitutional and ceremonial duties within the Realm of New Zealand. She represents NZ to His Majesty
Australia's Head of State is also King Charles III like NZ it is also a member of the British Commonwealth of nations like NZ is no longer a colony but it embraces something akin to the British Justice system, there in lays the value Commonwealth Nations enjoy.
(that our judiciary here in Australia is bent is another matter as is land titles as they are governed by by the Church of England.
Still many benefits arise from our constitutions, as there are also many benefits with NZ Bill of Rights Act, Australian constitution also sets in place a rule of law that is in-principle much benefit to the peoples of NZ & Australia.
King Charles III is a figurehead so we don't end up with pricks like Biden, Albanese, Morrison, Rudd, Abbott at the top of the heap, the Governor General is supposed represents the peoples rights HOWEVER Guy Fawkes has reincarnated over here.

I personally prefer Commonwealth countries maintain King Charles 111 as head of state.
I think big mistake taking away the benefits of a Head of State (who does nothing) taking away our Constitution taking away Elections controlled by the people, our democracy instead stupid systems based on American Republic. Which Liberal & Labor have unlawfully already implemented here in Aussie Aussie Land e.g president clown Albanese with the preference voting scam they used to claim representation with.

The BRICS, an economic platform for emerging markets and developing countries, welcomed its five new members - Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia in August last year during the group’s summit in South Africa.

The integration of new member states marked a major expansion for the bloc originally founded by Russia, Brazil, China, and India in 2006 and later joined by South Africa in 2011.

Egypt has been facing a severe economic downturn and record inflation, making it difficult for the country to repay its external debts.

The Egyptian external debt soared by 5.1 percent during the fourth quarter of 2022, reaching US$162.94 billion, a total of US$10 billion more than the previous quarter, according to official figures.

Russia Writes Off 20 Billion In Debt To African Countries

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that Russia has written off debts of African states worth more than 20 billion dollars.

Putin's comments came on the occasion of the International Parliamentary Conference "Russia - Africa in a Multipolar World," where the Russian President said that the volume of mutual trade "reached almost $18 billion by the end of last year."

In this regard, the President added that the volume of trade between Russia and African countries will benefit from "the more vigorous transition to national currencies in financial settlements and the establishment of new transport and logistics chains."

On the occasion, Putin said that in case the Black Sea grain agreement is not extended, Russia will supply food to needy African nations free of charge.

"We are convinced that Africa will become one of the leaders of the new emerging multipolar world order," Putin said, and added that the role of the African continent in international affairs is steadily growing.

Russia and African countries, along with many states of Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, "defend the traditional moral norms and social principles of our peoples, and oppose the neocolonial ideology imposed from abroad," the Russian President said, pointing to the global majority stance against neocolonial ideology.

Putin expressed Russia's commitment to work together with Africa "to strengthen fair and equal interstate relations and improve mechanisms of mutually beneficial economic cooperation."

US Ranking ‘Kicks Out’ India Out Of World’s Most Powerful Countries; South Korea Scores Over Japan

According to “US News and World Report,” India is 12th in the global rankings, behind Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Japan, France, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, China, and the United States.

Many may find this ranking of India behind even the UAE and Saudi Arabia or, for that matter, Japan behind South Korea in power terms in the Indo-Pacific a little surprising. However, it is noteworthy that the US News and World Report recognizes as many as six most powerful countries in Asia, sans India.

(Finally Taiwan see's the light !!
______________________________
Kirill Babaev: Here’s why the result of Taiwan’s election is bad news for the US
It will become apparent in the long term that China was the real winner

In 2023, the volume of trade between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait was $268 billion. This means Taipei traded more with its main adversary, Beijing, than with its foremost ally, Washington. And for Chinese business, Taiwan was a more important counterparty than the state’s key strategic partner, Russia.

These facts are important for an understanding of the current relationship between the two parts of China. They are inextricably linked not only by the commonality of language, history, and culture, but also by hundreds of thousands of trade and production contracts. And this may prove to be a decisive factor in the long-term struggle for the island between the great powers.

The elections in Taiwan on January 13 did nothing to change this. On the contrary, apart from pro-American candidate Lai Qingde’s victory (with a far-from-solid 40% of the vote), the parliamentary elections revealed the defeat of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which lost its majority and ten seats in the Legislative Yuan to the conventionally “pro-Chinese” Kuomintang Party.

The outcome has made the island’s power system somewhat unstable, suggesting that the main battle between Washington and Beijing over Taiwan is yet to come. However, the US has only one undeniable advantage in this war – the ability to pump its proxy with weapons and defense systems in anticipation of a violent conflict. China, on the other hand, has far more leverage. Thus, in the coming years, Beijing won’t try to solve the Taiwan problem militarily: on the contrary, it will attempt to turn America’s “Pyrrhic victory” on January 13 into a final US defeat in the next elections on the island.

Jakarta. Indonesia’s manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) is beating other ASEAN countries such as close neighbor Malaysia, according to business analytics firm S&P Global.

As the name suggests, the index portrays a country’s manufacturing performance based on new orders, output, employment, suppliers’ delivery times, and stocks of purchases. Indonesia’s manufacturing PMI went up from 52.2 in December 2023 to 52.9 the following month. This marks the 29th straight month of the Indonesian manufacturing sector’s expansion, which is marked by a reading of over 50.

Indonesia’s manufacturing PMI is higher than other ASEAN members whose PMI has been published so far. While the Philippines’ manufacturing sector expanded at a slower pace of 50.9 in January, it was still the second-best performing ASEAN country. Followed by Vietnam (50.3), Malaysia (49.0), and Thailand (46.7). The conflict-struck Myanmar saw its manufacturing PMI rise from 45.1 in December to 46.7 in January, thus showing that the country’s sector remained in contraction.

As of writing, S&P Global did not publish the January readings for other members of the Southeast Asian bloc. Nonetheless, ASEAN’s manufacturing sector expanded at 50.3 points in January, up from 49.7 the previous month. This is the first time that ASEAN passed the neutral 50.0 threshold in five months.

Infrastructure connectivity -- substantial progress is being made in the construction of six economic corridors: the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the New Eurasian Land Bridge Economic Corridor, the China-Indochina Peninsula Economic Corridor, the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor, the China-Central Asia-West Asia Economic Corridor and the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor. And in Africa, railways such as the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway and the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway are now operational and have become important drivers of in-depth development in East Africa and across the entire continent.

Maritime connectivity -- The Maritime Silk Road network has continued to expand. By the end of June 2023, it had reached 117 ports in 43 countries, and more than 300 well-known Chinese and international shipping companies, port enterprises and think tanks, among other organizations, have joined the "Silk Road Maritime" association.

Strong demand for Russian crude oil in China resulted in record transit cargo on the Northern Sea Route in 2023. More than a dozen shipments delivered 1.5m tons of crude oil from the Baltic Sea to China through the Arctic. In total the route saw 2.1m tons of transit cargo, surpassing the previous high set in 2021.

One Belt and Road Initiative growing stronger

US extended its claims on the ocean floor by an area twice the size of California, securing rights to potentially resource-rich seabeds.
The so-called Extended Continental Shelf covers about 1 million square kilometers (386,100 square miles), predominantly in the Arctic and Bering Sea, an area of increasing strategic importance where Canada and Russia also have claims. The US has also declared the shelf’s boundaries in the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico.
However the significance of the claim is likely muted by the implementations and credibility, that challenges the U.S. in direct consequence of its continuing failure to ratify the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in which the process for arbitrating ECS claims is laid out, among many other areas of important maritime governance. As the U.S. is not a party to UNCLOS, it therefore cannot petition the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to validate American maritime claims.

Not surprise that Nikolai Kharitonov, the head of the State Duma Committee on the Arctic, told Sputnik that unilaterally expanding boundaries on the shelf in the Arctic by the United States is unacceptable and may lead to increased tension.
