It's interesting you would post this, Cat. I just had a lady who does cleaning for me ask me to teach her English. As I have never taught a language before, I wouldn't know how to begin. Also, there are many classes here that teach English, I suspect she just doesn't want to pay (although they are very low in cost) or doesn't want to take the time.
The difficulties she had with English were expressed just as you described: the problems in pronunciation. etc.
Although I would like to help her, how would I teach her a complete language? It would be fine if she just wanted to ask me about certain words, but to teach her the language is a bit more of an undertaking.
It isn't very hard to wait 15 minutes to get an extra marshmallow. However, other circumstances that require self control do take a lot more effort than suffering a 15 minute wait. (Wish I could lose a pound by just waiting fifteen minutes to eat)..
They also may be worried that you might depend on them financially. It isn't just women who are looking for someone to help support them while they write their novel or have some other reason for lacking steady employment.
Calle, I don't know if that is true of "all" of them. I remember Kenneth Copeland and Joel Osteen back in the early 90s (not sure of the years, but some time ago). Their teachings have gotten much more materialistic than they were in the beginning. They actually had some good "sermons" back in those days. Perhaps money corrupted them, or something else. Scripture does say, "strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered."
Have you seen when the camera takes in Joel Osteen's audience? Packed!
People want to hear things that make them feel good. Hearing about the cross or other sacrificial aspects of Christian living doesn't draw in the crowds. Money and blessings do. Simple.
Interesting difference in word translation. I have always read the Scripture you quoted, "Whatever thou spendest I will repay thee," as "whatever thou "give", will be repaid. "Spend" makes it clear it means money. Can you tell me, what is the exact Scripture you are quoting, with the word "spend"? Thanks!
Socrates, VERY GOOD REVIEW on the "prosperity gospel".
It is extremely sad and disheartening to see so many preachers today claiming God wants them and all Christians to be rich. Worse, they hint or claim outright these riches will come only if Christians plant a "seed" (money) into the ministry (most notably theirs.)
Thanks so much Wallops, Angel, and everyone...I had a pretty quiet New Year's Eve myself... :) except at midnight! I was hoping my car alarm wouldn't go off, with the noise.
I hope no one got too drunk...I remember one New Year's Eve when I did (that I never forgot)...yikes!
Robert, I find it helps to write things down, and clarify what you want to change/accomplish in a new year. Hence this blog, struggling to stay afloat in an already overfloodedHappy New Year CS Blogland!!!
Guess a lot of people feel like you do, they just want to go with the flow...but I thought it would be inspirational and truly helpful to talk about other's original "resolutions" for 2015, or "changes" they personally wanted/needed to make...perhaps not the same old "lose weight" maxim (no matter how true it may be)...but small yet meaningful resolutions that will impact their lives in important ways.
Ken, I almost started to cry reading this story. Oh, my gosh, and just at Christmas! I agree with Snookums, so good she didn't give him the TV set, and then later he tells her!
Wow, you just never know sometimes, when the cyclone will hit. I hope she meets someone better down the road, and she will glad she did not stay with him.
As Elk said, he is blessed to have a daughter like you. Thank you for your love.
When people lie in bed all day or night, their sleeping patterns get mixed up, and sometimes they do mistake the time of day. It's hard for us to understand this when we are on a regular schedule, but I have seen/experienced it myself.
I hope you find someone to love you (if you are looking) because you are loving person yourself.
This is not always true, thank goodness, but it happens enough to cause a lot of pain in the world.

Well, John, your dad sounds like he was a lot of fun to be around. My Mom used to call the post man the "mail box" and mispronounce other stuff sometimes, and we would laugh and tease her about it. She also would sometimes talk while she slept in the chair and my brother and I would crack up about it.
