Let me guess does this have anything to do with religion. Because there are people that belong to certain religions that would set strict rules and interpretations of how a person should dress, speak, and act.
My ex-girlfriend left me early this year the same week I got laid off from my job. That was rough to deal with, but we live and we learn. That just means that she was not meant for me.
Sadly enough the American Dream is pretty much dead for my generation and future generations to come. The days of buying house in place the you like and finding a stable job in the place that you decide to set roots are over. These days in order to be employed you have to be willing to relocate. If you get laid off, you have to relocate to find a job. Every 2 to 3 years you have to switch jobs in order to keep your skills update. If you don't update your skill you find yourself unemployable.
The worst of it is that is really hard to provide a stable environment for a family because you know that in 2 or 3 years you have to be on the move again.
That means that I have to change my approach to life and postpone my dreams until retirement. If I ever get a chance to retire. Because with the way the economy is who knows if retirement will be within my reach. Specially when you have Wall Street and the big banks stealing the wealth of the world.

If you really looking for nice place to be in the midwest, try Illinois. Illinois is full of culture and people are lot friendlier there. Illinois is full of every ethnicity, color, culture that you can imagine. If job market was bad when I graduated from college I would have stayed there. But, sometimes we have no control of where we might end up in life.
I lived in Minnesota for about two years and I also noticed that people are not very friendly. My observation was that a lot of the Minnesotans stick to their own small groups of friends that they known all their lives. Also, the weather up there does not help very much when it comes to meeting people. It seems that the only place to hang around is the bar or Mall of America. Even there people are not approachable. Don't get me wrong Minnesota is beautiful state in the summer, but the winters there can be very depressing.
Maybe you live too far from one another. You cannot expect to carry a relationship online at some point you have meet and if folk live in different countries that is kind of hard.
