L’épopée de Gilgamesh est la plus ancienne légende écrite que nous possédons. D’abord transmise à l’o*al, elle est mise par écrit vers 2300 avant J.-C., sur des tablettes en écriture cunéiforme. Le texte se présente sous la forme d’un long poème de 3000 vers. C’est en 1872 que des archéologues anglais découvrent les douze tablettes contant les aventures du légendaire Gilgamesh, en fouillant ce qu’il reste de la bibliothèque d’Assurbanipal, à Ninive (nord de la Mésopotamie).
