Growing up in the west of Ireland we had only Irish TV stations, no British. Then about 1980 we got BBC and ITV and so on. One of the first things was Brideshead, what a series that was.
Would you believe I've never heard of her, I must check her out. Have you read Brideshead Revisited? I expected a lot because of the superb TV adaptation and I wasn't disappointed, great book. Maybe we should have some sort of book club on here? I'd sure appreciate any you'd recommend as you know your stuff. Actually those two M. Amis books you read were the ones I read too.
I sleep much better after a bit of reading as well. Like you said you can get the classics very cheap these days. Have you tried Kingsley Amis and Martin Amis? There's a lot of humour in both of them, usually dark humour.
Indeed he is more useful, and industrious. But when his body gives way in middle age and he can't recycle any more he will starve. The millions of permanently useless people in the west will still be looked after, by the state.
Countless millions have benefitted from the welfare state. There is a problem with homelessness I agree but the solutions to that problem are complex, as the problems are complex. I also agree about America but still more people try to get there than any other country in the world.
Not the same thing though. The welfare state will give you a house, enough money to survive, free healthcare and educate your kids so they have a better chance than you had. Will India do this? I doubt it.
India has brutal inequality compared to the West. That's more relevant than a simple figure of unemployment. You may have a job but you might have to sleep underneath the machine you work on all day long with barely a break.
RE: Saki
Ok, interesting.
