Have you ever wondered why flowers are beautiful? Please, don't give the science lecture about bees and pollination. Plenty of other plants and trees are pollinated without bees or flowers. Or, flowers could have evolved to look like cow patties, and bees would be attracted to cow patties. But as it is, flowers have been a symbol of beauty everywhere on Earth since before recorded history.
They were probably the first things that human beings came to value that didn't serve any pragmatic purpose. There is a legend that the Buddha once gave a "silent sermon" by simply holding up a flower and staring at it. Some time passed, and one of those who were present began to smile, a monk named Mahaka-can't remember or pronounce. The "smile" or understanding was passed from Master to Master, and later became the origin of Zen.
Flowers must be something more than bee magnets. I like to think of them as messengers from another dimension. Their universal beauty is a memo from the universe itself. They are nature's art, nature's way of expressing itself. When we see the beauty in them we awaken, if only for a moment, to the beauty that exists within each of us.
They are inspiring not only to poets, romantics, and song writers, but to everyone. Jesus said that we should consider how the lillies grow, and learn from them how we should live. Without even fully knowing how or why, flowers are an expression for us of that which is most high. They are a reminder of the beauty of our own expression, our own existence.
We feel an affinity with them, because whether we recognize it, or we don't, the beauty that exists in them ultimately exists in us. Flowers are beautiful, for our sake, more than bees, to connect us to the spirit realm.
