Yes, lots of Swedes moved to USA. Something like 1,5 million people left Sweden and considering the population was around 5 million around 1880, it's like emptying the country. I've distance relatives in Minnesota. You can always learn "prata svenska" through Youtube!
If two people meet and there's no mutual language, I'm sure they'll find a way to communicate. I've been to Russia twice and don't know any Russia, but managed to "speak" through my hands!
Yes, I speak English fluently. In Sweden, the main language is Swedish.
I'd think it would be difficult to communicate through the Google translator or a dictionary in your pocket. What I've learnt through the years is that you can't translate word by word. It might get a different meaning in the other language. Be careful with Google translator! (When I'm in a mood, I might suggest "better words" to Google! ) A dictionary is more reliable!
If you want to meet someone from here and you don't have a mutual language with, I can only wish you GOOD LUCK!
As I recall you have lived in Sweden for a while, right? The differences between here and your country must be huge! People here are free in a sense we don't live with double standards like in some other countries.
Many Americans haven't been outside their own country. How can we expect Americans to keep track of all European countries, when they're struggling knowing the name of their own states! Just meant as a polite reflection.
