I remember it pretty well - actually, because of its populace, Dearborn was also in the national news frequently after 9/11.
A lot of it was compassion, as they do love their country and their city here in the states. This is true of many of the friends I have back there. Some of it must have been outright fear - I think it would have been a tough spot to be in during that chaotic time.
There actually were in Dearborn, Michigan, home to the largest concentration of Muslims in the country. This I remember, because I was still local then.
Besides, my friend, you don't strike me as someone who paints with a broad brush...
