my last dog was 3 yo when he had to be put down. Hopkins was an English Pointer, who suffered from uncontrolable epilepsy. No meds seemed to work and he got progressively worse, till I had to do right by him

But, There is an old addage that I think is great:

If you love someone...set them free

If they come back, then they are yours forever,

If not....then they were never yours to begin with!!
