Years ago, weirdos didn't go out or if they went out, they didn't get an audience because no one wanted to talk to them. These days, they are all on the internet and find like-minded people. This makes them think that they are "right" and not whacked out of their mind. They are even wondering why they can't find a partner.
I'm thinking about PM's I got on here - these guys weren't interesting, they were scary. Looking at some of my mail, I always wondered why not more people were securely lock away.

I am independent but I'm glad to know that whatever happens, I can count on my family to be there for me and I am for them. I don't find it always easy to ask for help, but I learned to do it when necessary. I'm glad to be pretty self sufficient and can do a lot of things myself. I couldn't image being financially dependent on someone.
I loved the freedom of growing up on a farm and I'm glad that I learned that working for something got me results. I can relate to the values you mentioned.
My sister hated it and lives a completely different life than me.
