RE: Let's Talk About God

Are you acquainted with the term "scientism" ? This can be used as a neutral term to describe the view that natural science has authority over all other interpretations of life, such as philosophical, religious, mythical, spiritual, or humanistic explanations or the social sciences. Even though it might as well imply a criticism of a perceived misapplication or misuse of the authority of science in either of two directions, "scientism" with its background of proven hard facts is still the superior alma mater…….far away from worshipping any supernatural deity. handshake

RE: Say Anything IV

Well commented...are you sure that "Quatsch mit Soße" is halfeway understood over here ?
...anyway, it's still "Quatsch" ...even without Soße rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Let's Talk About God

...c'mon Mr. Yeats...been to school or to university? That's why you understand the world and not trough myth !
Where would we be today without science? Still in the middel ages, illiterate and killed by the churches ! scold

RE: Let's Talk About God

First always comes proof of the existing phenomena...can't proceed here ?

Then I guess you are familiar with "Occam's razor" !

It was based on "William of Occam" and says: "Non est ponenda pluralites sive necessitate" or in english: "Do not multiply entities unless necessarily". It is a principle for scientific labour which means that one should use a simple explanation with a few explanatory premises before a more complex one.

Let's say that everything must be created, and that was done by an omnipotent god. A god which stands above time, space, moral and existence, which is self containing and in it self has it's own cause. This entity can surely be replaced by the known world. The world stands above time, space, moral, existence, is self containing and in it has it's own meaning. Most theists agree that god has a nature. Then we must raise the question, who created god's nature? If we just accept that god has a nature and exists without a cause, why not say that the known world just is and that the laws of physics are what they are, without a cause?

God is not really an explanation, only a non-explanation !

It is impossible to gain information from non-information so God as an explanation is a dead end. When we have said that the reason for something is that 'god did it that way' there is no way to understand it any further. We just shrug our shoulders and accept things as they are. To explain the unknown by god is only to explain how it happened, not why. If we are to investigate the world and build our views of life from the world, we cannot assume a god. Because adding god as an explanation leaves as many, if not more questions than it explains, god has to be removed with Occam's razor if we are serious in investigating the world, like "scientism" surely is.

So god really is just a myth.....and maybe some kind of a psychological calmative for those who need it. Just remember how that "god" came to us in the very old days: there was thunder and lightning and nobody knew what it meant and the humble answer was "god"!

Ergo: with analytical intelligence and information god just disappears.... wave

RE: DO YOU BELIEVE IN UFO'S AND EXTRATERRESTRIALS?

Naaa, c'mon, this "Report" from July 1999 is a PRIVATE paper, has nothing to do with an official publication by the
French government ! ...it was sent as a copy to the government and they did not even comment on it !

Their assessment of the situation is more than questionable, at least in the last part of the report which, although
unsigned, bears the marks of industry with close ties to the military and research facilities whose names have already been
cited in relation with GEPAN’s, then SEPRA’s long history.

Unless these people have insider information, which would have yet to be revealed, their leaning toward the more paranoïd trends of ufology is more than alarming. They consider for instance Corso’s assertions to be possibly reliable much as they do with Nick Pope’s views. Roswell is taken for granted (!) and North America is portrayed as the ‘Big Black Wolf’ who’s debunking scheme, especially (but not only) over Roswell would seem logical if we are to believe they have aquired otherworldly objects.

This "report" for sure has jeopardized any serious or official interest on the UFO phenomenon in France...and since 1999
no further news was published ! professor

RE: Astrology & Birthdays

There's no science like "astrology"... it's just a fun(ny) game

The real science is "astronomy"...quite a difference !

Astrology can't even get the present Zodiac signs right, thei're all wrong by 30 days, or one full sign !

The ecliptic, or the position of the Sun as it’s perceived from the revolving Earth, passes through the constellations that formed the Zodiac signs when they were originally determined abt. 2600 years ago.

Early astronomers observed the Sun traveling through the signs of the Zodiac in the course of one year, spending about a month in each. Thus, they calculated that each constellation extends 30 degrees across the ecliptic.

However, a phenomenon called precession has altered the position of the constellations we see today.

Precession and Astrology

The first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere was once marked by the zero point of the Zodiac. Astronomers call this the vernal equinox and it occurs as the ecliptic and celestial equator intersect.

Around 600 BC, the zero point was in Aries and was called the "first point of Aries." The constellation Aries encompassed the first 30 degrees of the ecliptic; from 30 to 60 degrees was Taurus; from 60 to 90 degrees was Gemini; and so on for all twelve constellations of the Zodiac.

Unknown to the ancient astrologers, the Earth continually wobbles around its axis in a 25,800-year cycle. This wobble—called precession—is caused by the gravitational attraction of the Moon on Earth's equatorial bulge.

Over the past two-and-a-half millennia, this wobble has caused the intersection point between the celestial equator and the ecliptic to move west along the ecliptic by 36 degrees, or almost exactly one-tenth of the way around. This means that the signs have slipped one-tenth—or almost one whole month—of the way around the sky to the west, relative to the stars beyond.

For instance, those born between March 21 and April 19 consider themselves to be Aries. Today, the Sun is no longer within the constellation of Aries during much of that period. From March 11 to April 18, the Sun is actually in the constellation of Pisces!

RE: who would you say was the greatest teacher that ever excisted?

Well, I'd say:

Galileo Galilee,
Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher, best known for his major role in the scientific revolution. An ardent supporter of Copernicanism, he brought about great improvements in the telescope as well as the consequent astronomical observations. He's also credited with discovery of the four largest satellites of Jupiter (named Galilean moons), and the observation and analysis of sunspots. For his contributions to the world of science and astronomy, he is often known as 'Father of Modern Observational Astronomy', 'Father of Modern Physics' and 'Father of Modern Science'.

Sir Isaac Newton,
one of the most renowned physicists of all times, he's also credited as a great mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian. Through his Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, he laid down the groundwork for most of classical mechanics. He also described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion, used in science till date. Newton also laid down the principles of conservation of both momentum and angular momentum, built the first practical reflecting telescope, developed the differential and integral calculus (along with Gottfried Leibniz) and contributed to the study of power series.

And of course

Albert Einstein,
some of the famous teachers of the world have set him as a role model by living the life of a whiz kid and making unparalleled contributions to the prosperity of mankind. Albert Einstein is one great personality remembered for his works in the field of physical science. The German-born theoretical physicist is the inspiration to many aspiring teachers in the world. The mastermind of special relativity and general relativity, Einstein is not just the role model for teachers, but also an inspiring personality for students of science.

And last but no way least:

Ayn Rand,
she was a Russian-American novelist and philosopher. Her more famous novels include the following 'Atlas Shrugged', 'The Fountainhead', 'Anthem' and 'We The Living'. Ayn Rand died on March 6, 1982, leaving behind the legacy of her brilliant work. She shot to fame with her best-selling novels and by developing a philosophical system called 'Objectivism'. Even today her works are admired by people all over the world.

wonder why VENICE is not mentioned in this thread ?

RE: Biocentrism

Quite right, just too many assumptions/hypothesis, not much left if Ockham's razor is applied !

RE: Biocentrism

guess you talk about LANZA...

oh well, his bio-"centrism" ideas are truly far-fetched just keeping in mind that more than 90pct of the universe represents "dark" non-bio matter / energy whatever and 99.99999pct of the rest is extremely hostile to bio-elements which results in less than 1 ppb (part per billion) for the bio stuff leaving it completely isolated and unable to form any kind of "centrism" from the viewpoint of the whole universe.

RE: SOS

"God" is just a concept and as such he/she/it can't do anything,
