RE: Allowances

I never gave my kids an allowance but I gave them opportunities to earn money. Giving a kid money for doing nothing is a very bad lesson.

RE: Allowances

When I was about 10 my mother gave me 25 cents a week. That's about what it cost to go to a movie. By 13 I'd been going to church every Sunday and putting about 45 cents in the basket when it was passed down the isle twice. One Sunday I was standing in front of the church looking at the huge solid wood doors thinking about the 45 cents in my pocket. I could go to the movies with that money and also buy candy. I figured I needed that money a lot more than they did so I made a left turn and walked to the movie theater and never went back to church again.

The 10 best songs ever produced

Thank you Pek Maybe I'm just an old fart but I'm not familiar with any of the songs on your list so I decided to listen to one of them "Judas Priest - Beyond the realms of death". I must confess it's not the kind of music I'm accustomed to but I think that guitar solo was epic.

The 10 best songs ever produced

I am adding a 3rd song to the very slowly growing list. So far we have;
25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago
I want to know what love is - Foreigner
Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx

RE: What is the most common term found in both men’s and Women’s profiles on dating sites?

Dragging this thread, kicking and screaming back on topic, here is a list of requirements I found on the profile of a young lady one time which really struck a chord with me. It said
he must be;

Kind
Honest
Passionate
Transparent
Open
Considerate
Strong
Sensitive
Gentle
Respectful
Loving
Giving
Great Sense of Humor
Caring
Trustworthy

The only missing traits are “Wealthy” and “Terminally ill”
uh oh

The 10 best songs ever produced

Excellent choice, I just added that to my list. How could I overlook such a gem?

In your opinion, what song(s) should be included on such a list? Please include artist or version in your choice(s) as well if necessary.

I will start of by nominating this song by Chicago, "25 or 6 to 4"

RE: Please Vote on thisTV Commercial

Kinda boring actually.

The middle class in the heart of the rust belt just got their pockets picked

You asked "what would you do?" I would do what GM has been doing every year since the early 50's. I would switch to a different model which the public IS buying. They are very experienced at that task, it's almost a no brainer for them.

The middle class in the heart of the rust belt just got their pockets picked

No need to insult someone you disagree with. I could say, based on the % of subjects you talk about on here, Trump is living rent free in your brain as well.

RE: Is Hypnotism a Fake?

Absolutely not fake. I dabbled in hypnotism when I was a young man. It's a lot of work. You have to be a good story teller and paint a picture with words. I used to use it to help people overcome some of their fears and also in a few cases to help people who were trying to quit smoking.

The middle class in the heart of the rust belt just got their pockets picked

By imposing tariffs on Chinese imports and promising unemployed blue collar workers that this will bring manufacturing back to the US and they will get their jobs back. This induced people all across the country who were trying to feed their families and not wind up homeless to vote for him out of desperation. It was actually a pretty clever tactic. Of course it didn't work, all it did was start a trade war.

The middle class in the heart of the rust belt just got their pockets picked

Didn't Trump promise to bring manufacturing jobs back to the Midwest by clawing back production from China? I find it ironic that Trumps nemesis, Barrack Obama, bailed out GM only to have the Trumpet stick a knife in it.
GM is eliminating all 1,700 hourly positions, perhaps for good, at the factory near Youngstown, the first of five North American auto plants that it intends to shut down by early next year.

The other plants slated to close this year are assembly plants in Detroit and Oshawa, Ontario, and transmission plants in Warren, Mich., and near Baltimore.

Oh hey, I got an idea, maybe GM can build a plant in Greenland after Trump buys it .rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

RE: So Why did You Split Up?

We split up for a whole bunch of reasons, like urging me to put the house in her name (in case I croaked she wouldn't be put out on the street by my ex wife) she also pressured me into getting life insurance and naming her sole beneficiary.
I was a truck driver and living in northern NJ was a very expensive horrible place to be a trucker and I longed for the country life in Virginia with better roads, much less tolls, much less traffic, cheaper everything.
Our relationship was wearing out. We were actually going to counselling. The final nail in the coffin came from her sister who stole a mangy, flea ridden, Siamese cat from a neighbor and asked if we could take it til she found a home for it. This was a ruse and I saw right through it. I knew that if we let this cat in the house it was there to stay. Many "discussions" followed about the cat til I finally told her it's me or the cat. I guess she thought I was kidding. She got the cat. We sold the house and I left. About 6 mo's after I left the cat died. So, she lost a good man, a very nice house, a lifestyle free of financial worries and she didn't even have the cat.

RE: Who's the savvy investor then?

Wall Street is a place where people with money go to find people with experience to manage their money. In the end, it's the people with experience that end up with the money and all the people with the money end up with is experience.laugh

RE: Who's the savvy investor then?

The fundamental difference between Bitcoin & gold is supply and demand. It's very difficult to alter the supply of gold and fairly easy to alter the supply of Bitcoin. A teenager can produce bitcoin in his bedroom without leaving the house.

RE: what funny kind of spam do folks here get. ?

My EX's new bf was selling a computer on an online site when he got an offer from a guy in Ghana for $100 over what he was asking. He said he needed the computer right away for school. We both told him it sounded like a scam but he wouldn't listen. The buyer sent him a cashiers check for $200 over the asking price and contacted the bf saying that he made a mistake by sending $200 instead of $100 could he send the extra $100 back when he sent the computer? We again told him it was a scam but again he trusted the buyer. He took the check to the bank and they told him it looked good so he deposited the check and mailed the computer plus the $100 over-payment to the buyer in Ghana. I guess by now you know the next thing that happened, Yep, about a week later the bank notified him the the check came back marked "Insufficient Funds". So Not only did he lose his computer but he was also out $100. plus the shipping costs.

Question for Brits

I remember a very big "todo" on TV that year and it was with a lot of pomp and circumstance from I think it was England, I've always remembered it as the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth but it was so long ago my memory could be faulty. Plus I was only 17 at the time so it was competing with way more important things ...like girls, cars and getting drunk, but mostly girls.laugh

Question for Brits

Who's Coronation took place in 1957? It was a big televised event in the USA that year.

RE: warming up of the earth

This so called "umbrella effect" would only be valid if the global warming was generated by the earth, and not from external sources such as the Sun. While it's true there are some sources of thermal activity emanating from the earth such as volcanoes, forest fires, human activity, and even heat generated by all animal life including around 8 billion humans, it is but a fraction of the energy which falls on the earth constantly from the star we are in orbit around. While it's probable that Cosmic particles striking the upper atmosphere create visible water vapor, AKA Clouds, this cloud cover actually acts like a reflector of the light energy which falls on the earth from the Sun and is more likely protecting the earth by allowing the earths temperature to remain cool enough to support life, rather than rising to a point where all life on earth would be burned to a crisp. The reflectivity of the oceans and clouds is what makes life on earth possible.

It's all in how you interpret the data generated by these studies.professor

That's the kind of racing I used to do. Those guys are pretty fast.

RE: Has anyone had a Catheter inserted........

I've been cathed several times. My Urologist, a male, was way more gentle than the 20 something female nurse who did me post op one time. I thought she was trying to get back at men for all the grief she got from her BF. I remember one time saying to my Uro, "At times like this I wish I was a woman." "No you don't he said, they have a smaller opening than a man." My recollection was it was less painful coming out than going in.

It pays to shop around

Today I went into a very large Dollar Store to get a few things, soda, some snacky pound cake for my coffee, a gallon of cheap fruit punch and some super glue which I needed to mend a broken grill on my box fan. I found the super glue in the hardware section and was dumbfounded by the selection.
There was a blister pack of 2 tubes for $1.99. and right next to it was a blister pack of 3 tubes for $2.00 confused This made absolutely no sense. Looking around a little I found another blister pack of 6 tubes for $1.00.wow laugh
