This guy Zolna looks to be of retirement age doesn't he? Kind of a Pot/Kettle scenario playing out.

RE: if the bible is the book of god

I don't think it works anywhere like that. It's been years since I read an article about this subject in Scientific American as I remember the iron particles in the birds brain detects this line of magnetic energy and if they veer off left or right they correct their direction drift to get back on the beam. I imagine they can tell the strength of the line to know which line they want to follow. I think they supplement the electrical signal with visual clues as they travel.
I wonder what the bible says about this question. probably something like god guides the birds back to their home. Riiiiiight.

BTW, the bible can't be the word of god if it's been re-written 84,000 times! Hello?doh

The GOP the Grand Old Party not so grand anymore.

The president just called me and asked if I could ban that guy Reb. He says every time he opens his mouth my approval rating goes down about 2 % pts
I said "I'm sorry Mr President but the founding fathers, with the 1st Amendment, granted everybody the right to free speech, even you." The 1st Amendment doesn't say that a person has to make any sense. If anybody should be thankful for that, you should!

RE: if the bible is the book of god

"How do birds find their way to the same location and back again every year during migration?"

Birds follow the magnetic lines of force of the earth a lot like the way planes and ships do. only they don't have a compass. There is microscopic iron particles in their brain which picks up the earth's magnetic field, That enables them to navigate along these lines to their destination.

RE: if the bible is the book of god

I agree, because god doesn't exist.

The GOP the Grand Old Party not so grand anymore.

Epirb, how come you're worrying more about the politics of a country halfway around the globe than what's going on right in your homeland? For example;

I wonder if you're even IN New Zealand. confused

BTW, if you want to discuss the problems with trichloroethylene I'll be happy to oblige.

The GOP the Grand Old Party not so grand anymore.

A while back I asked a question; "Who was the last good Republican president?
I'm still waiting for an answer. Somebody said Abraham Lincoln. How sad is that?

Let's look at more recent Republican presidents Like George Bush. I purposely avoided Richard Nixon because it would be like taking candy from a baby. One could lay the current Opioid epidemic right at the feet of George Bush. He missed the chance to prevent it by taking his eye off the ball when we were in total control of Afghanistan in 2001, and had the once in a lifetime opportunity to literally wipe out the entire Opium culture and shift the Afghan farmers over to growing food, instead he got greedy and cared more about his oil interests and decided to invade Iraq resulting in 1000's of lost lives. In case you haven't heard, Afghanistan just produced an 87% increase in Opium production last year.

Republicans hate debt but create more debt by giving big tax cuts to the rich. Don't they understand that in order to pay down the National debt, the Gov needs to bring in more revenue? There aren't too many ways to do that and taxation is the major source of revenue for a Government.

with a record like that I don't understand what makes Republicans so damn proud.

BTW did you notice? Not once did I resort to hateful name calling.

Isn't it about time to stop this tribal, US vs THEM mentality and start behaving like grown up Americans who want only what's best for our beautiful country? Stop putting party first and America second. Trump spouts America first all the time while in reality he is a 100% Republican party first and America second. He even admitted it in a raucous campaign rally in the Florida panhandle, near the state line with Alabama. “We cannot afford, the future of this country cannot afford to lose the seat,” Trump said, referring to his party’s razor-thin 52-48 advantage in that chamber of Congress.
Did you happen to notice the repetition Conspeak in that sentence? (“We cannot afford, the future of this country cannot afford)

The GOP the Grand Old Party not so grand anymore.

I've read a lot of derogatory comments about Democrats on this site including a lot of hateful name calling like Libtard, Libturd and Demonrat as well as calling the former president Obozo and Odumbo not to mention Mrs. Clinton, "Killery". Once you start name calling, all hope of having any intelligent discussion goes right out the window. This is a very childish practice and serves no useful purpose besides making the person making the slur feel clever. Whereas it makes the person look like a bully to be avoided. What kind of an impression do you think people outside the US get when they read such trash talk? I have no doubt they think we're all very low class, uneducated and juvenile. It's kind of ironic too because Republicans really don't have such a great history having done some incredibly mindless and damaging things to the health and welfare of the American people and the overall economy.

While Republicans didn't exactly *create* the great depression, Republican Senators Smoot and Hawley with their protectionist tariff act, unquestionably exacerbated what would probably been little more than a slight recession or "Correction" in the stock market and instead created an epic global depression. Republican Herbert Hoover was president at the time and the Republican motto of "laissez faire" translation; "A policy or attitude of letting things take their own course, without interfering." This meant that Hoover could just sit in the White House on his hands and not lift a finger to try to fix this major problem in fact it was the Republican credo to do nothing, so Hoover just stood by and let the world economy collapse. Why, they even named homeless camps "Hoovervilles" after him.

It took a Democratic president, FDR, to address the myriad of problems to fix it. FDR created more programs to help the people than any 5 Republican presidents you can name and most of those programs are still in effect today like Social Security and the FDIC which insures your savings acct if the bank goes belly up. And FDR was a cripple! FDR spoke directly to the people through radio broadcasts not 140 character "Tweets" that the average citizen doesn't even read.

RE: Trump names Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

From a logistics point of view, moving the capital from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem puts Israelis in greater danger because Tel Aviv is 45 miles from the nearest Arab neighbor Jordan and Hamas. Jerusalem is only 18 miles from the border with Jordan. This makes Israel a much easier target. Hamas rockets can be pinpointed with much greater accuracy than when they had to hit Tel Aviv. Furthermore, Tel Aviv is on the coast of the Med providing a quick escape route not to mention a ready supply of water available for extinguishing fires. Jerusalem has none of that and if that's not enough of a reason for this move being a really bad tactical mistake, putting the capital in Jerusalem amid all those irreplaceable religious sites which would be destroyed by Hamas rockets, is criminal in it's shortsightedness.doh
I always thought Jews were a lot smarter than that.dunno

RE: The U.S. House of Representatives passes h.r. 38 making mandatory reciprocity for all states.

Another Federal over reach into states rights. This should prove very interesting. This means a person from Missouri with a concealed hand gun can walk around Manhattan in NYC and totally disregard the cities Sullivan Law? This I gotta see!laugh

76th anniversary of Pearl Harbor is tomorrow December 7th a date which will live in infamy

This is the full speech by FDR.

RE: Trump names Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

Israel is a sovereign nation, what give the president of another country the authority to change which geographical location is to be the Capital? That would be like Russia deciding that the American capital be relocated from Washington DC to New York City, or Kansas City or Bismark, North Dakota.confused

RE: made is usa. auto mechanics

Well, I got about a dozen responses from the other site and I almost got a headache reading them. From what I gather there is a connection between the brake light circuit and the ECU (computer) which tells the ECU to cut back the power if it senses a signal from the brake light circuit. This way when you're trying to slow the car down with the brakes, the engine can't be allowed to be adding more power to make the car go faster. Apparently the faulty brake light circuit was sending this "slow down" signal to the ECU causing a chronic loss of power. Once the faulty brake light circuit was corrected all the power which was there but throttled back, became available again.

RE: made is usa. auto mechanics

Hey Duro I posted a copy of this thread on a car site I hang out on. I'll check back tomorrow and see what they have to say.

BTW, I lived in Pinellas Park years ago. I worked for a place called Florida Brake and Clutch.

RE: made is usa. auto mechanics

You might go back and ask to talk to the mechanic who worked on the brakes and ask him what he found and tell him your car seems to have a lot more power now. He might be able to explain it. If the service manager gives you a hard time about talking to the mechanic you could say I'd like to thank him and give him a tip.
Let us know what you find out.

RE: made is usa. auto mechanics

Sounds like your brakes were dragging. Did you smell anything?

No I use Scottrade. They recently merged with TD Ameritrade.

I started out with Merrill Lynch I was duly impressed with their beautiful building with lots of glass and polished brass banisters. Eventually it became clear to me where they got the money to pay for all this glitz. For about 6 months with Merrill I was seeing purchases for more shares of the funds in my acct and it was obviously due to being enrolled in a dividend reinvestment program. I never agreed to this, it was something they did without my consent. I let it ride for a while but I noticed that the price per share PPS they were paying for these buys was always higher than the prevailing PPS. I put a stop to that. I'm in a similar reinvestment program with Scottrade but I'm in total control of it.

I don't invest in stocks anymore because it seems unless you have some really good insight into a company or industry it's almost like gambling. I have to watch myself when dabbling in securities and if it gets a little too weird I ask myself "Is this a gamble or an investment" and if it seems more like a gamble I walk away from the trade.

One time a friend of mine in the mid west told me there was an article in the local paper about a big company in her area that looked very much like the workers were going on strike. This was the biggest employer in the area so it was going to have a big negative affect on the local economy. Based on what she told me I decided to short the Co stock. The following Monday the workers walked out and the stock plummeted. I covered my short and made about $500. I sent a check for $50 to my friend for the tip.

These days I'm totally into ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds). This way your risk is spread out and it's not a sink or swim scenario.

RE: Donald Trump has been accused of fuelling hate crime

You make the classic mistake of interpreting anger and outrage as whining and crying, we Democrats are pumped and motivated and you'll find out after the mid terms just how pissed we are. Forget about trump winning a 2nd term in 2020 he'll be lucky to survive even 1 term.

RE: NK just fired a missile against Japan

What I'd like to know is where NK is getting this technology. Surely not from their own scientists & engineers, they're lucky if they even eat well. There's only 2 countries that fit the bill and we all know who they are. NK is being used as a pawn.

This thread seems to have veered off into agriculture. While I did own a small farm at one time I never made any money from it. Quite the contrary, I planted a corn crop when corn was $3.40/bushel. At harvest time it had dropped to $2.15. I could have literally bought the corn from the local co-op for less than it cost me to grow. All was not lost though as I consumed the corn by using it to make hog feed which I fed to my pigs. All in all it was little more than a learning experience. What made it difficult was I had no farm machinery so had to rely on other custom farmers to do everything which meant that I was a low priority. In fact, The guy who planted it was a "no show" when it came time to Combine the crop. His excuse was his wife had a miscarriage. For the life of me I couldn't fathom what one thing had to do with the other. By the time I lined up another farmer to bring in my corn crop it had already been half eaten by birds and had been snowed on. The guy at the co-op who took a sample for checking the moisture content asked me "Where did you get this corn, out of a swamp?" frustrated

RE: NK just fired a missile against Japan

"NK just fired a missile against Japan"

Pretty inflammatory word there lady. You need to be a little more careful of the words you chose. Against signifies intent. I doubt it was NK's intent to hit japan. That would constitute an act of war and would bring the wrath of Japan and the US on the little fat man and he knows it.

What NK did was not very different from a kid with a bottle rocket. I doubt they had any accurate knowledge of where the rocket would land.

Keep stirring the pot honey and you may get what you don't want, like a nuclear war which will engulf Manila.

Let's talk about MONEY.

Got any?

What do you do with it to make it grow?
Stick it in a savings acct?
invest it in Gold, Silver, Stocks, Bonds, mutual Funds, Money Markets?

Got any tips?

I started investing in 1968 when the DOW was around 800. I felt I could do better than just letting my little nest egg sit in a savings acct earning a few pennies a year. So I went to a local full service broker and opened an acct. MLPFS for those in the know. My well dressed acct executive gave me a glossy brochure with about 8 stocks the firm was recommending. I picked one and put all my money into it and for the next 6 months I watched it go steadily down. I even subscribed to the WSJ and created graphs of my investment. I could have drawn a line with a ruler at about a 45 degree angle from the upper left to the lower right.

I was living in New Jersey at the time and there was so much urban sprawl there was no land left and prices for housing was going steadily higher. Pennsylvania to the west was the only viable direction for humanity to expand to and the stock I picked was called a REIT or Real Estate Investment Trust located in PA. I was going to get a piece of the action, or so I thought. It is now my firm belief that the broker had listed all the crap they were trying to unload on that lovely glossy brochure. I fell for another crap stock they were trying to unload called American Seal Cap Co symbol AMK. They made the little cardboard caps for milk bottles. MILK BOTTLES! Was I really that stupid?

Back in those days the broker had you by the balls. They charged a fat commission for every 100 shares of stock you bought or sold. There was no online trading using the internet because there was no internet. If you wanted to buy some shares, your broker would have to call the Co employee on the floor of the stock exchange to yell out your order to the "Specialist" who dealt in that particular stock. Sometimes you wouldn't know till the next day if you got the stock you ordered and how much it cost. Later on the brokers got computers to use for order entry but it still had to go over the phone line at a slow speed. It could easily take an hour to get order confirmation. These days you can buy or sell 10,000 shares in a split second with a few mouse clicks.

Recent trip to McDonalds

Was it written out in longhand or did you print the letters? I think printing might be more difficult because you have to stop between the letters. I think you get bonus points for printing.

I would pay to see you do that.laugh

RE: the magazine and the president

Time magazine doesn't need trumps permission to use his ugly face on their cover, it's known as "Freedom of the press."

Time should create a new cover called SCHMUCK OF THE YEAR
trump could be on the cover of the first edition.barf

Recent trip to McDonalds

A woman once told me that she and probably most women envy the fact that men can just whip it out and let go without having to squat and expose themselves when relieving themselves.

Recent trip to McDonalds

Standing in line waiting to place my order a lady went to the bathroom and when she opened the door I could see it was quite crowded in there. The lady standing in front of me on line obviously saw it too. I said, "Standing room only in the ladies bathroom." "I see that". she said.
I said, "That wouldn't be a problem in the mens room". "Don't rub it in". she replied.laugh
