RE: How long have you been single ?

She didn't even know who her father was then. This was in NYC. She was preggo and her mother felt it was the right thing for us to do. You could get married at 16 with the parents consent. I remember her mother saying "I don't care what you do, all I care about is what the neighbors think. Her grand father said upon learning we had gotten married exclaimed "Good, it's a good way to get rid of her". You can see why my wife was happy to get the H out of that house. After her mother died she finally met her biological father and he said that he had been paying child support to the mother til my wife turned 21. We never saw a penny of that money because the mother simply kept it. Oh, and the mother was super religious too.

RE: Better Days Ahead !!

I quit my job in 1989 with no prospects for employment in sight. I planned to live off my savings until something came along. I already owned a 21 acre farm with a farmhouse I had already renovate with a very modest mortgage. I had been aggressively managing my finances since I was in my 20's and had a substantial nest egg which would give me lots of time to explore earning opportunities. I fell back on my old trade of auto mechanics to make ends meet without dipping into my savings for about 6 months when I promoted a position with a Co in another state. eventually becoming a courier with my car and then to a 20 foot box truck I'd bought in the past mostly for moving. I was now a full fledged owner operator trucker making more money than my old job paid and I had no boss. I think you have to be in a career to actually retire but if you go from job to job the concept of retiring doesn't really apply.
BTW, you prepare for retirement when you get out of school and start your first job. Sow your wild oats when you're young and when you can't sow anymore, take it easy.professor

RE: Trade War?

I find it interesting that in the early 80's the interest rate was close to 20%. I'm wondering if there's a connection between high unemployment and high interest rates? That was right around the time the Fed started printing money like it was toilet paper.

confused What a strange question. One problem I see with this idea is;
How are you going to feed one of these beasties? A T-Rex might turn his nose up at a can of dog food.

RE: If you was left cash in a will by a deceased relative...

I wouldn't open a business, I would invest it in the Stock Market. A lot less work.

RE: More gun control in the USA

The thread asks "More gun control in the USA"? Many people will answer YES or NO without reading the text that goes along with the question. IOW people who feel there are way too many guns on the street and too many mass shootings will answer YES immediately. Gun owners and 2nd amendment freaks will answer NO immediately. But the question really asks about disarming people who have a legitimate right and duty to carry a weapon such as police and Presidential security officers (and Duck breedersdoh )
When I had a flock of laying hens, (Egg sales) I had to have a way to protect them by eliminating predators such as Raccoons, Possums and Foxes to name a few. I was in the same boat as hunters who kill deer for food. Eggs are food after all. Hunters don't go into churches and spray bullets around so they are not the problem. The founding fathers were paranoid about Great Briton taking back this young country after we won independence and imposing taxes on us which was why the 2nd amendment was included in the constitution. The whole thing has been blown totally out of proportion today. Nobody wants their rights to own a gun for protection or hunting to be taken away and nobody wants criminals, the insane, or mass murdering fanatics to EVER own a gun, not even you though you will never admit it.roll eyes

RE: More gun control in the USA

This guy Greg Gutfeld has a severe Under bite. BTW that's a very absurd question. Also the way the question is framed is extremely misleading. This poll is meaningless.

One more thing, "duck breeders"? "preachers"? I never met a duck breeder and I never met a preacher who packed heat.
BTW, the POTUS doesn't carry a gun.

5 countries dump more plastic into the oceans than the rest of the world combined

1, China
2, Indonesia
3, the Philippines
4, Thailand
5, Vietnam

Indonesia doesn't have trash collection so they just dump their garbage into a nearby river which simply flows out to sea, problem solved.

Half of the polar ice cap is gone

Thanks for that Len. It always baffles me that so many people are willing to believe in the supernatural and life after death and some spirit making a full grown man from a handful of basically dirt and angels flying around and talking snakes and, unless you worship this spirit and support his representatives with all their living expenses you will burn for eternity after you drop dead, but they refuse to accept the mountain of evidence that the planet is in fact getting hotter and billions of people may be having an effect on it.doh

Trump the great businessman

America guards its credit rating with a passion which is why the almighty dollar reins supreme in the financial capitals of the world. America has NEVER defaulted on its debt and never will, which is why Trumps plan will fail. He is thinking very small if he thinks he can cow tow China into taking 90 cents for a dollar of American debt. That may work when dealing with a delinquent car loan or a Pay Day loan but it's not going to work on China and the $1,300,000,000,000 in ($1.3 Trillion) US Treasury notes they are holding.

China has been buying US Treasury bonds for decades, in a way, you could say that China owns us.

RE: China Warns Trump

China can do a lot more than that Ken, Maybe you're unaware that China is the biggest buyer of our treasury bonds? China is sitting on 1.3 Trillion dollars of American debt. If they get into a trade war or kerfuffle with the US they could dump those bonds onto the market and that would have a domino effect which would impact every American with a pension or a 401K or SSI. It would also hurt the bond market which would spill over into stock market and lead to a huge sell off of bonds and stocks. If you think the 07-08 recession was bad, you ain't seen nuthin yet.

Furthermore, Trump has said that his plan is to buy back our debt at a discount. This is just the opposite of what really happens in stocks and bonds. When a corporation offers a share buy back, it's always at a premium to the current share price and news of a buy back always triggers a boost to the share price. In fact, insiders who learn of an impending buy back, have traded of that info before it's release to the street and have been prosecuted for it. As you know it's called "Insider Trading'. Think Martha Stewart
.

Trump the great businessman

In September 2014, Trump Entertainment Resorts filed again for bankruptcy, and closed the Trump Plaza. On a motion made by union UNITE HERE Local 54, relating to the bankruptcy action, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit ruled in Trump Entertainment's favor on January 15, 2016 and held that Trump Entertainment could reject the continuing terms and conditions of a collective bargaining agreement with the union, an agreement that had already expired by its terms. This case was significant as it was a matter of First impression among the courts of appeal and could significantly alter the balance of power between debtor-employers and their unions.

The company exited bankruptcy in February 2016 and became a subsidiary of Icahn Enterprises.

On October 10, 2016 the Trump Taj Mahal closed for the final time.

Trump the great businessman

"Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. is a gaming and hospitality company that owns and operated the now shuttered Trump Taj Mahal hotel and casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States, as well as the now-shuttered Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. Formerly known as Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, it was founded by Donald J. Trump, who is no longer involved in the company. It is a subsidiary of Icahn Enterprises.

In 1988, Trump purchased the unfinished Taj Mahal property from Resorts International for $230 million after negotiations with Merv Griffin in which the two men divided the assets of the failing company. The casino, at the time the largest in Atlantic City, would eventually cost almost $1 billion by the time it opened in 1990. Trump completed the project using junk bonds, a decision that hurt the company afterward as the gaming industry struggled in a recession and interest rates became unmanageable.

In 1998, THCR business consultants spent at least $68,000 on a trip to Cuba in violation to the United States embargo against Cuba. According to a report by Newsweek, the consulting firm Seven Arrows Investment and Development instructed THCR on how to evade the embargo by linking the money to a charitable effort.

On October 21, 2004, the company announced a preliminary agreement with its investors. Trump, who had been the majority owner, would reduce his stock ownership from 56 to 27 percent. Bondholders would surrender some of their debt in exchange for stock. On October 27, the company announced that Morgan Stanley would be the joint lead arranger for a $500 million financing as part of the restructuring plan. On November 21, the company filed for bankruptcy. Trump said the filing was "really just a technical thing" as the best way to implement the restructuring plan. The plan was submitted to the Bankruptcy Court on December 16, 2004.

In 2007, the company attempted to negotiate a buyout with several public and private firms, but on July 2, it announced that it could not reach a deal, and would take itself off the market. The company planned to lay off employees in order to cut costs.

The casino group filed for bankruptcy again in February 2009, owing $1.2 billion. Two sets of debt holders eventually proposed reorganization plans for the group in U.S. bankruptcy court.

Trump initially made an agreement with banker and poker player Andrew Beal, owner of Beal Bank, which held $500 million in the group's debt, to take over the resorts. However, citing concerns about the bank's lack of gaming experience, he dropped them in favor of hedge fund Avenue Capital Management, a plan favored by other bondholders. Beal then partnered with investor, Carl Icahn, who had worked on restructuring another Atlantic City casino, the Tropicana. In court, Trump argued that he would fight the Icahn/Beal team if they sought to use his name and likeness on the group's properties.Instead he signed an agreement with Avenue Capital in which he would receive 5% stock in the reorganized company and another 5% in exchange for the use of his name and likeness in perpetuity.

RE: 75 Years Later We Remember Pearl Harbor

Most people these days only know a couple of sentences uttered by FDR regarding the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. There were far more sneak attacks throughout the Pacific regeon at the same time as part of Japans decision to start a world war. Here is the full speech.

How do you post utubes these days?

RE: The van Allen belt

Whisper what I posted were quotes from famous people. I did that to counter the lie that Einstein and Darwin were believers, they weren't. I totally agree with you that Islam is not a religion of peace as I pointed out in a thread I created back in 2015 ref here:

BTW jt, scientists generally don't get "flabbergasted", only ignorant and fearful people do.

RE: The van Allen belt

"It appears to me (whether rightly or wrongly) that direct arguments against christianity and theism produce hardly any effect on the public; and freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illumination of men's minds which follows from the advance of science." (Darwin)

"If we believe absurdities, we shall commit atrocities." (Voltaire)

"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism." (Einstein)

"Faith means not wanting to know what is true." (Nietzsche)

"I cannot believe in the immortality of the soul.... No, all this talk of an existence for us, as individuals, beyond the grave is wrong. It is born of our tenacity of life – our desire to go on living … our dread of coming to an end." (Edison)

"The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma." (Lincoln)

"Religion is a byproduct of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity?" (Arthur C. Clarke)

"Religions are all alike – founded upon fables and mythologies." (Thomas Jefferson)

"Say what you will about the sweet miracle of unquestioning faith, I consider a capacity for it terrifying and absolutely vile." (Kurt Vonnegut)

"Religion is based . . . mainly on fear . . . fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. . . . My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race." (Bertrand Russell)

RE: The van Allen belt

jt, your knowledge regarding science is severely limited. I surmise your childhood education was composed mostly of religious matters. It may help your understanding that, were it not for science, you wouldn't even know there are belts of radiation surrounding the earth. The Van Allen belts were discovered in early 1958. The belts were not created by any gods but it is the magnetic field of the earth which traps radiation thrown off by nuclear reactions deep within the Sun. As the radiation fluctuates there's more or less particles to attract so the belts get bigger and smaller. Nobody is throttling the belts in tune with the Suns output just like nobody is causing the tides to rise and fall.

RE: The People Has Spoken: Trump our new Leader

Yeah there is a lot to do,
like a RECOUNT.

Clintons popular vote lead is approaching 2 MILLION votes. How does that grab you? WTF kind of election process would reward a candidate with a win when that person was beaten by almost 2,000,000 votes?????
Something stinks.

"...and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Lincoln is probably turning over in his grave that this clown succeeded in STEALING the Office of the President from the majority of Americans.

I guess Trump will reform the tax code $o that people in the 1% like you and Trump will get the free ride you crave $o much. Boy, I bet you're gonna $ave $o much on your taxe$ that you'll be abliged to take another crui$e to $ome exotic paradi$e.cheering

RE: Let's make America Great Again

Why do people waste their time and energy arguing about that which is totally out of their control? Trump won according to an unfair election process where politicians pick the president instead of the will of the people. This is the second time I know of where the winner was chosen not by the people but by delegates and was contrary to the popular vote. This system may have made sense 200 years ago but it doesn't make sense anymore, what with modern communication methods and computers. It is long overdue that the Electoral College system be abolished so that the people of America decide by voting for their leaders and not by a bunch of politicians. Is it any wonder that so many people don't bother to vote?

As for me, I've decided to stop worrying about how screwed up our system is, and instead concentrate to make the most out of the outcome. I've already made several hundred dollars in the stock market on statements made by trump and I'm in the process of making more. Trump is a disrupter and that always creates opportunities to make some lucrative investment decisions. Trump is shaking the tree and you can bet there are people like me who are waiting to pick up the fruit that falls to the ground.

One more thing. Many of you are probably too young to remember what transpired in Germany during the 30's that gave rise to the National Socialist Party and their leader known by some as 88. The older of you will see the parallels to what is transpiring in the USA these days, as well as students of history.

Learn from the past or be condemned to relive it!professor

RE: North America

I didn't vote for trump but I managed to benefit from his bombastic threats to raise tariffs on Chinese steel being dumped on the US market. I've been holding stock in US Steel since 2011 at one point losing over $15,000.00. After trump won the Electoral College vote, many investors started buying US Steel and other American steel producers stock driving my holding up into the green at which point I bailed out with a modest profit.

If he goes through with raising tariffs on imports and I have no doubt he will, you can rest assured that foreign countries will retaliate in kind and raise their own tariffs thus starting a trade war where no one will be a winner. Our exports such as corn, will go down along with manufactured goods and farmers will feel the effect of crashing agricultural product prices. The price of corn fund stock is already in the toilet while Iowa corn is rotting in the field.
