If I was like a lot of people...back then...it wasn't so much the lyrics, as it was the tune! As popular as it was...I guess that 85-90% of the people didn't know the words either.

Hey Ooby...without going through all the suggestions, I'll post what automatically came to mind as I read your question.
Prepare your beans as planed, dice up 2-3 potatoes (1/4 to 1/2 inch cubes), and the same with 1 or 2 onions (your choice of type), and 1 or 2 thick slices of fatback. Include the onions and fatback to the beans and cook as needed. When the beans are half way done, include the potato cubes. Reason to include the potatoes at this point...is so they don't turn to mush.
