Re. vulnerabilty, I am somewhat uncomfortable with the message being "you have the power to deeply hurt me" but its essential to a degree for a successful, subtantial relationship..... so the decision is to bite the bullet.... or not?!

Life is full of risks and dangers to our wellbeing, that is merely ONE of them. In avoiding the risks one is less receptive to any wonderful opportunities that arise too....
